Sequel to last Wednesday’s partial deregulation of the downstream sector of Petroleum industry by the Federal Government with an increase in pump price of petrol from N86.50 to N145, the organised labour and their civil society allies have resolved to lead Nigerian workers on strike after Wednesday, May 18.
It was learnt that labour leaders will send a letter to government latest tomorrow demanding a total reversal to the N86.50 pump price of petrol before 12 am on Wednesday, failing which all installations will be shut down thereafter.
The industrial unions have said between Monday and Tuesday, they will mobilize members for a nationwide total strike, and therefore urged Nigerians to prepare for the industrial action by stockpiling food items and other essential things they may need during the duration of the strike.
SOurces revealed that while leaders of Ayuba Wabba faction of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, will meet with their Trade Union Congress of Nigeria ,TUC, counterparts today in Abuja alongside some civil society groups to harmonize positions on how to go about the planned action, the Joe Ajaero led NLC will also meet today in Lagos with some civil society groups to take position.
It was also gathered that though the National Executive Council, NEC, meetings of Ayuba Wabba faction of NLC was very stormy as labour leaders from the north were foot-dragging over the planned strike, labour leaders from the South west, South-South and South-East, insisted on fighting the government to a stand still over the hike. After much pressure, it was gathered that labour leaders from the north agreed to give the planned strike their total support.
It was then resolved that a letter be sent to government between today and tomorrow on the resolve of labour and their civil society allies and that industrial unions should mobilize their members between Monday and Tuesday for a total strike that could commence on or after Wednesday.
Meanwhile, TUC on its part, at its NEC meeting gave government till Wednesday to invite labour leaders to find a way forward to avoid a total shut down of the country.
However it is expected that at today’s meeting between TUC and Wabba faction of NLC, both positions would be harmonized for the action to begin on Wednesday.
Addressing journalists after its NEC meeting, yesterday in Lagos, TUC President, Mr. Bobboi Kaigama, said the body was giving the Federal Government till May 18, to invite labour leaders to discuss the way forward to avoid nationwide strike.
“‘The NEC in session has given the government till Wednesday 18, to invite the leadership of labour for discussion aimed at determining the appropriate way forward,’’Kaigama said, According to him, the leadership of TUC would interface with the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Civil Society Allies to work out plans that would be put in place to protest the increase in fuel price if the government fails to meet the Wednesday deadline.
Similarly, the Ajaero led faction of NLC which had earlier given indication that members would join forces with other bodies and Nigerians to fight the hike, would meet today and also take a position.
Ajaero revealed that as pro-people group, it would always stand by the people to find out how to lessen their pains. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

DeleteLet's face it, "WE ALL FAILED OURSELVES".
ReplyDeleteWhat Nigerians failed to realize is that any policy that is for the Common Good must be guarded by "EVERYBODY" and "NOT JUST THE GOVERNMENT AND IT'S AGENCIES ALONE".
It's been several weeks now and with all the Scarce Dollars (thank God the looting spree era of GEJ/PDP/Etc has ceased) being injected into PMS (By the way why PMS only, we must really be smoking something here in Nigeria) all to no avail.
Instead, you have the hoodlum Marketers feasting on Nigerians. NNPC brings in PMS at lower prices, Marketers collect and sells at exorbitant prices and instead of Nigerians to Organize themselves into enforcement Groups and defend the Government Policy and Help it to work for the common good, they fold their hands and just talk grammar and never put in any effort. It's common knowledge that daylight robbery is being perpetuated by Marketers and Hardship being inflicted on Nigerians yet the TLC, NLC, etc never saw it fit to start their own monitoring and help curb the illicit and irresponsible behaviours.
Even, the depots were not left out of the illicit dealings. Hoodlums were busy smiling to the Banks (Even under this Mantra of Change).
With all these, what is the most logical thing to then do? Please let us be serious and proffer realistic ways forward rather than engaging in ranting lunacies.
The Unions and Legislatures should start looking at proffering palliatives to cushion the effect of the deregulation rather than wasting unnecessary time.
Nigerians actually firmly set sail the Ship of Deregulation and the Government has no other choice than to Board That Ship.
The Deregulation Ship has left the Port. Please let's start talking of other useful things.
Where are we from, we are from an era of plundering and bleeding of our dear Nation's commonwealth dry by highly irresponsible GEJ, PDP and cohorts.
What do we need right now, the message of creativity, perseverance, understanding, cooperation, patience, sense of belonging and responsibility.
This Change shall work when we all work together.
May God complete the deliverance of Nigeria from utter backwardness in the mighty name of Jesus, Amen.
May the Lord continue to frustrate and reduce to oblivion all the known and secret enemies of Nigeria in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Amen and Amen.
May the Lord erase all the known and secret enemies of Nigeria like human fart in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, Amen and Amen.
Exactly. Amen
DeleteMUMU!
DeleteRubbish Rubbish Rubbish. Wgich change are you talking about. A government that lies to its citizens has no integrity. APC had promised that it would reduce fuel prices when it knew it was indeed going to increase it. They said there was no subsidy and that subsidy was a fraud, now they are saying there is subsidy. Apart from the lack of integrity, they are very heartless.
DeleteI don't know Wat is wrong wt our govt. we call it democratic govt yet we fail to practice it. Democracy is a govt of d pple, by d pple and for d pple. I think if something that affect everybody like ds should happen, the govt should be able to carry pple along. They didn't decide to do ds overnight. They must be bn thinking n deliberating on it for sometime, there are tv stations and radio. They can communicate Wat d pple using dse media but no, they just wake up and decide for us telling themselves we are mumu, we ve no choice. Why can't dey go on tv programs, let us knw Wat is happening around us, let us see the reason we ve to take some decisions so that at least 70% of pple ll be prepared. Your explanation now ll not solve anything cz u suppose to be done dat before taking d action. We understand ds thing promising to do ds and dt just to get d power and den u later realized it's not an easy task. Fine. But pls learn how to address issue so that nobody ll feel cheated at d end. Baha'i be wise pls. God bless Nigeris
