Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has confirmed he will be active in the transfer market following last night’s defeat in the Europa League final to Sevilla, with Mario Gotze emerging as one of his top targets.
He is adamant that his plans will not be affected by the fact the Reds will not be able to offer European football next season.
Gotze is Liverpool’s top target with the 23-year-old unsettled at Bayern Munich and expected to leave the Allianz Arena.
According to reports that Klopp thinks Gotze will be attracted to his project at Liverpool and the chance to work with each other again.
Klopp played a key part in Gotze’s development at Borussia Dortmund and helped him become one of the best midfielders in Europe before he joined Bayern in 2013.
Gotze, who scored the winning goal in the 2014 World Cup final, has been advised by a number of people to make the move to Anfield this summer.
Bayern’s honorary president Franz Beckenbauer and former midfielder Thomas Strunz both said it would be wise for the midfielder to follow Klopp to Anfield.
And Liverpool players Emre Can and Roberto Firmino have both said they would like to see Gotze join them.
“At Bayern he is lacking a bit of confidence which is understandable. A move to Liverpool would be good for Mario,” Can told Bild.
“Klopp has shown this season how much trust he puts in young players. German players are popular in the Premier League.
“The fans would be very happy to see more German players in the Premier League.”
Firmino said: “He has incredible qualities in attack.
“He would fit in well with us, and he will surely help us with his class also.”
