Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo said he regrets not privatizing the National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) during his time in office.
Speaking at the opening ceremony of a two-day maritime stakeholders conference organized by the Ministry of Transportation and its agencies in Lagos yesterday, Obasanjo said he would have privatized the company 20 years ago if he had the faintest idea that it was going to be used as a conduit to embezzle public fund by succeeding administrations.
“With our experience in NLNG and the telecommunication sector, let us adapt and adopt,” he said.

Papa OBJ, you definitely tried your best. You brought NLNG to reality, with a world-class ownership and operatorship model. You sold the ailing and inefficient Eleme Petrochemicals Company to Indorama who revamped it and turned it into a cash-cow, provide real employment to Nigerians. You sold the refineries before Yar'adua unfortunately reversed it. You opened up the telecommunication sector, delivering Nigeria from the incompetent and corrupt NITEL. You have done well for Nigeria.
