Fuel Price Increase: Labour, FG meeting deadlocked

The Nigeria Labour Congress,NLC and its affiliate body, the Trade Union Congress,TUC, Monday, vowed to press ahead with its industrial action, scheduled to commence tomorrow if the Federal Government fails to reverse to old pump price of petrol.

The two unions asked the government not only to put all the nation’s refineries to optimal use but also increase minimum wage, besides putting all necessary palliatives measures before deregulation of oil. Both spoke in separate remarks before formal commencement of the meeting it held with the government over the latter’s increment of fuel price, last week.

But the government pleaded with the labour organisations to see reasons with its action and shelve its planned strike, saying it was open to dialogue with the bodies.

This was even as the governor of Edo State,Adams Oshiomhole, who was at the meeting to mediate between the two warring sides, opposed agitation for wage increment, saying it was not sustainable at the moment. NLC president,Ayuba Waba and his TUC counterpart,Bobboi Kaigama, said there was the need for government to reverse to old pump price of fuel, given that the development was having a toll on the masses.

At the meeting attended by the Secretary to Government of the Federation,SGF,Babachir Lawal,Minister of State,Petroleum,Ibe Kachukwu,Ministers of Labour and Employment,Dr Chris Ngige, Budget and National Planning,Udo Udoma,Information and Culture,Lai Mohammed and Solid Minerals,Kayode Fayemi, the two sides were unable to shift ground as at press time.

Dr Chris Ngige, who presented government’s position, said the government was open to dialogue, urging the labour organisations to consider the proposed industrial action as the least possible option.

  1. Some of these people that marry in dollars don't know what the masses are passing through. They prefer to be giving out handouts to dying starving children while carrying the who foreign press and camera to record such actions as they and their wives embark on such useless egoistic charity than to put policies that can eliminate such situations. God dey ooo! Make una fear God ooo!

As much as i dont support the action of the Labour Unions as they will soon be compromised, Strike is the only language a heartless government like this understands.

  5. Can we really call this ppl labour union or bunch of corrupt individual using the Nigerian labour union to fight for their own selfish interest. Where are they when some members of the union where not paid salary for months? Where we're they when up till now some state workers still hv not gotten the so called 18000 minimum wage bt suggested to the same inflation caused by the first increment, and they are calling for another increment. Where were they wen fuel marketers sold fuel far above the government approved pump price? It seem to me that the executive of the union only use the union to fight against government policy that they feel is not in their favour. Once thier own wage is increased and they are comfortable, they forget abt the other members who are yet to enjoy from the collective struggle.

  6. ANY MEETING BETWEEN THE REFEREES AND THE 22 PLAYERS WILL ACHIEVE NOTHING GOOD FOR FOOTBALL EXCEPT FOR IT TO BE KICKED HARDER AND TOSSED FROM ONE END OF THE FIELD TO THE OTHER. THE GOVERNMENT AND LABOUR SEEMS ALL UNITED AGAINST THE MASSES. WHICH REPS AND WHICH NATIONAL ASSEMBLY? THOSE WHO BOUGHT CARS WORTH 33.5M CARS FOR THEMSELVES OR THE GOVERNORS THAT REFUSE TO PAY EVEN THE #18000 MINIMUM WAGE. WE EITHER STAND UP TO ROAR "NOOOOOO" OR WE PERISH IN PENURY. Jay 2, Abuja.
