A Yola-based lawyer, Mr Roland Emem, has sent a draft anti-corruption bill to President Muhammadu Buhari for possible forwarding to National Assembly as an Executive Bill. Emem posted the bill to Buhari through NIPOST office in Jimeta Area of Yola, on Saturday.
He told newsmen that he posted the bill to ensure that it was accorded attention. “Corruption has grown so powerful in Nigeria, making it very difficult for an individual bill against corruption to receive the needed attention,’’ Emem said.
The bill titled “The Government Business Bill’’, redefined the scope of corrupt practices by criminalising some acts and omissions of impunity of political office holders and civil servants, directors and staff.
Other criminalised activities were agents of companies contracted by the various tiers of government in Nigeria that always manifested in areas of poor budget implementation. The others were breaches of government contracts and abandonment of government projects.
Emem said that the bill also sought to grant diversified powers of prosecution extended to non-governmental organisation’s involve in fighting corruption.
The Area Postal Manager, Mr Atoo Mamegh, who registered the letter containing the proposed bill to the president, assured that the speedpost letter would be delivered to the presidency latest by Monday. Mamegh lauded the anti-corruption activist for having confidence in NIPOST, and assured him that he would not be disappointed by NIPOST ability to deliver.
