British newspaper, DailyMail mocks Buhari’s anti-graft credentials

A British newspaper this morning questioned President Muhammadu Buhari’s anti-corruption credentials.

The Mail Online said President Buhari who is typecast as the People’s President may be waging a war against corruption but that his critics have described the war as a witch hunt.

The paper said Buhari sends his daughter to a £26,000-a-year English school.

and that in April the opposition PDP party unearthed a ticket stub showing Hanan, 16, had flown first-class from London to Nigeria, despite her father’s ban on officials using premium travel.

The report quoted a Nigerian newspaper alleging Buhari had spent £150,000 on educating his daughter Zahra, a Surrey University student.

The paper also reported Buhari’s failure to give a full account of his worth, and that even his partial admission included more than £1million in the bank, five houses and two plots of land.

The publication comes 72 hours before President Buhari’s scheduled arrival in London for a world anti-corruption summit, to be hosted by UK’s prime minister, David Cameron. In his company, will be the attorney-general, Abubakar Malami and EFCC chairman, Ibrahim Magu.

But to the Mail Online, “The presence of Nigeria’s president at David Cameron’s anti-corruption summit this week may surprise many in his nation – which receives vast amounts of UK aid.

“Self-proclaimed ‘People’s President’ Muhammadu Buhari began a war on corruption after taking power last year, but critics allege it is a political witch-hunt.

“The Government is giving nearly £250million in the coming year to oil-rich Nigeria..
“Supporters say 49 arrests of members of the previous regime show the anti-corruption war is genuine, but opponents say it is politically driven.

“Nigeria has the highest-paid government officials in the world but is one of the largest beneficiaries of UK foreign aid.

“The president of its senate, Bukola Saraki, is due to face trial on corruption charges after it emerged he has a £6million London property in his wife’s name.

“The Nigerian Embassy did not comment”, it said.

  1. Thos is no anti corruption war but a personal antagonistic and vindictive with hunt of those that criticise buhari,s shortfalls. He is after those who arrested him when he was overthrown in 1985 ( dasuki), those whose fathers found him guilty of embezzling $2.8 billion (saraki) and those who voted against him during the last election ( people of the south east and south south) using his Fulani brothers. We are watching. How does he afford the money to pay £26000 per year for her daughter? Where are the so called trillion recovered from pdp members?

  2. Hahaha! What do you expect.when you too visit your friend you may start to lose his respect. But the truth is that a lot of the people in APC led government are very corrupt too. But the good thing about it is that when the present government leaves power most of them may likely face prosecution just like what is happening to majority of the people in the past government.

  3. This government are just with hunting political opponents.Does it means that it is only members of the opposition party that are corrupt? It is a political vendetta and also way to muzzle the opposition.

  4. Someone's lifestyle does not necessarily prove that he is corrupt. The obviously sponsored Mail Online story does not say Buhari has been found to have stolen money. What would be of interest, in the case of Buhari, is whether he has assets that he has failed to declare.

  7. You people are unbelievable! So the gvt should leave corruption to continue and not do anything about it because it can't prosecute those corrupt within its fold. The British have always supported corrupt regimes in Africa and been against leaders who work in the interest of the country. Witch hunt or not corruption must be fought and controlled! Jonathan broke a corruption record set by IBB'S gvt. Corruption fights are always selective everywhere in the world for the simple reason that no sensible human being bites the fingers that feeds them. It is up to the people to elect another party at the next election if they feel like and that new party will audit the previous one! That is how it works! The new Liberal gvt in Canada is already uncovering a lot of corrupt practises of the last Conservative gvt. Including a contract signed immediately they lost the election! That is how this thing works. Understand it and don't expect Buhari to prosecute his own allies because you wouldn't if it were you!!!!

    1. Thank you.
One of the most reasonable comments I've read of late.
Wether witch-hunt or not, the most important thing is that people are getting exposed and quite interesting is that none has denied any involvement.
So tell me what da f**k is the noise with witch-hunt?

  8. Anonymous May 8, 2016 at 5:00 PM God bless you, you are just perfectly right. Britain & America don't also want African countries to get out of theses problems. The collect stolen funds from African bastRf politicians who are the greatest fulls on earth, help them by given the8 and their families citizenship after looting their homes dry. Because they benefit from huge funds the bring to their countries. But the pretend and welcome people like buhari saying they will support him.
