Newcastle United and Norwich City have both been relegated from the Premier League, following Sunderland's 3-0 win over Everton at the Stadium of Light.
Sunderland, who began the evening in 17th place, knew that a win on Wednesday night would condemn their fierce rivals and Alex Neil's side to the Championship next season, and secure their own survival.
The Black Cats now sit on 38 points and will have nothing riding on their final game of the season this Sunday, against Watford at Vicarage Road.
Norwich defeated Watford 4-2 on the same evening but the result did nothing to save them from the Premier League trapdoor.
