Arsenal are ready to make a move for Bayern Munich defender Mehdi Benatia in the summer, according to the Daily Star.
The Gunners are on the hunt for a top class defender to partner Laurent Koscielny, with Gabriel and Per Mertesacker having endured disappointing campaigns.
Morocco international Benatia has himself had his struggles at Bayern this season, particularly with injury, but remains highly regarded.
However, with the Bavaria giants looking likely to sign Mats Hummels from rivals Borussia Dortmund, Benatia is set to be pushed down the pecking order.
He openly criticised the club for their pursuit of the German international defender.
“I have no problem, if I have to leave Bayern Munich, then I’ll leave, but first I want to end this season well,” he told Sky Sport Italia.
“I am experiencing a very important moment of my career and I won’t be like the club who decided to talk about the transfer market before a Champions League semifinal.”
This has opened speculation over his future at the Bundesliga club, with Juventus last week named as possible suitors.
The Daily Star now believe that Arsenal will rival the Italian champions for Benatia’s signature, with the Gunners looking to beef up a squad which missed out on the chance to win the Premier League.
