The Minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, on Wednesday said about 50 million Nigerians don’t have access to portable water.
He made the remark while speaking to State House correspondents after meeting with President Muhammadu Buhari at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.
According to him, the country was not able to achieve its 2015 target of 75 per cent coverage for water supply and the percent for sanitation.
He said: “That is part of issue we are putting in the document we presented to the President, you know we subscribe to the Millennium Development Goals by last year and we were supposed to have achieved 75 per cent coverage for water supply and a certain percent for sanitation. Unfortunately we are not able to meet that.
“We met the water supply by only 69 per cent but we did very poorly in sanitation. So this 69 per cent means over 50 million Nigerians still don’t have access to portable water and that is a huge number of people.
“So we have come up with a programme which we are going to unveil in detail at the National Council on Water Resources meeting next week. That programme is aimed at ensuring we are now able to meet the SDG target for 2030 and there will be 100 percent access for everybody.”
He said that the ministry has come up with a huge programme that will help to cover those gaps.
The programme, he said was part of the package presented to President Buhari on Wednesday.

I dunno where they get their figures from... is it in this same 9ja where we don't records? No forensics, no central database? I also wonder how this administration want to identify the un-employed they promised 5k/month. For the record, no average Nigerian will agree to be employed. I think we're still joking in this country.
