We are ready for rainy season - Lagos

The Chairman, Lagos State House of Assembly Committee on Works and Infrastructure, Mr. Abiodun Tobun, said on Saturday that the state government had prepared adequately for the rainy season.

Tobun told the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos that the government had reconstructed collapsed drains and repaired many roads to cope with the flood waters.

“The Lagos State Government is proactive and ever ready. It is the vision of the state government to ensure that residents are adequately taken care of and that they face little or no challenge during rainy season.

“All hands are on deck, and currently, the Ministry of Works and Infrastructure is fixing collapsed drains, while the Ministry of Environment is also doing all round de-silting of the waterways and dredging the channels.

“So, we are ready, most of those roads that are not motorable are now being rehabilitated, while some were being patched by the State Public Works Corporation,” he said.

The lawmaker said the corporation in collaboration with other state agencies were making efforts to ensure a hitch-free season.

On the ongoing repair of the Lagos-Badagry Expressway by the state government, Tobun said the contractor had completed 50 per cent of the job.

He added, “Lagos State Government being a very responsive one heard the cry of the people on the poor state of the federal road which has been abandoned.

“The Lagos-Badagry Expressway is in a terrible state and we cannot allow it to remain abandoned till the Federal Government takes a decision on it.

“We must urgently take responsibility before the rains; if the roads become impassable during the rainy season it will bring untold hardship to the people.

“It will be irresponsible of us if we do not work on the roads because they are not state roads.

“We are assuming the role of the federal government, though it is a challenge,” the committee chairman said.

The lawmaker said that the Public Works Corporation had identified 10 major bad portions on the expressway and was already fixing them.

According to him, the corporation will complete the job before the end of April.

He urged the Federal Government to intervene in fixing attention its infrastructure including roads in the state, citing the Apapa-Oshodi, Ikorodu-Itokin and Lagos-Badagry Expressways.

“The state government is passionate about the welfare of the people, hence the deploying of money meant for other projects to reposition some deplorable federal roads.”
