Police IG orders arrest of anybody found buying or selling petrol in plastic containers, jerrycans

Apparently concerned by untold suffering as well as hazard emanating from the activities of black marketers, especially those who sell petroleum products inside plastic containers/jerry-cans, the Inspector-General of Police, Solomon Arase, has directed all Zonal Assistant Inspectors-General of Police and State Commissioners of Police to arrest anybody found selling petrol and other petroleum products in plastic container.

A statement signed by the Force Public Relations officer, ACP Olabisi Kolawole quoted the IGP saying that “apart from the hardship this act is causing to fuel buyers, it has also rendered some innocent and law abiding citizens homeless due to fire outbreak from jerry-can petrol storage.

He noted that fuel products such as petrol are highly flammable and if not stored and handled properly, can seriously endanger people, property and the environment.

While warning fuel attendants at filling stations to desist from selling petrol inside jerry-can/plastic container, the Inspector-General of Police said both the buyers and the sellers of the products will be arrested and prosecuted under the law.

The IGP, while assuring Nigerians of the Police readiness to fulfill its constitutional mandate, appealed for a more cordial relationship.

  7. This is obviously a directive that wasn't properly thought through, having no regard for the repercussions and long term effect.

It's obvious this person isn't directly affected by the hardship the present fuel scarcity and erratic/unavailable power supply is causing the average Nigerian. It's just sad.

Besides, what law would offenders be prosecuted under? It is well sha. The saying "God dey" no be poor man prayer again but wise man own.

    God help and bless Nigeria.

  8. Why is everyone complaining about the IG directive. The man is from another planet oblivion of the untold hardship that the leadership of Nigeria has brought on millions of Nigerians. There are lot of moronic utterances these days. Imagine a father telling people that his children don't have food to eat because somebody is diverting the food meant for them to their neighbours [Cameroon & Niger-minister of petroleum.] Please somebody should ask him what his responsibilities are. You cannot blame Mr Aranse for his directive-he has allocation directly from DPR so he doesn't know what the masses are passing through. The law of Karma is patiently waiting for them and most importantly I know everything that has a production date must have an expiry date. I stand with Nigeria. I refuse to be a bad Nigeria, I condemn tribalism, nepotism, corruption.#NIGERIAISFORALLOFUS#

  9. I suppose the IGP knows that Nigerian police officers do not use their discretion when carrying out orders. He should pass that instruction in a more succint way.
