Nigeria bans top government officials from flying first class

The Federal Government on Wednesday banned all top government officials from flying first class while embarking on officials trips.

This is contained in a statement by the Media Adviser to the finance minister, Mr Festus Akanbi in Abuja.

According to the statement, the decision is in a bid to reduce the amount being spent on overheard expenditure.

The statement further noted that all top officials of government such as ministers, Permanent Secretaries, Chairmen of Federal Government Committees, as well as Chairmen and Chief Executives of Parastatals and Agencies are to travel on business class.

It will be recalled that before now, some government officials who should have been on business class usually travelled on first class, while many others travelled business class instead of economy class.

Akanbi in the statement said the new directive has been captured in a circular on review of overhead expenses released by the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

He said the development is one of the recommendations made by the Efficiency Unit which was set up by the Minister of Finance, Mrs Kemi Adeosun, last year aimed at reducing overhead expenses.

The unit was set up to engender transparency and reduce government’s large expenditure through procurement in the various ministries, departments and agencies of the Federal Government.

  1. Dear minister of finance. I want to tell you that you have not started working for Nigeria and Nigerians. You don't deserve and payment or salary from Nigeria purse. Work more and stop complaining about sabotage and shortage of fund. Please help me tell others FEC to consider this word. Nigerians expect more than all unnecessary fallacy that reveals your incapability to change anything. God save Nigerians

  2. Are these people financial mangers at all ,don't you know that the booking of first class further brings down the cost of economy class, the principle is that the rich subsidizes that of the poor ,if you remove first class ,the bulk of the fare will be sheared and the effect will be general increase in price per head ,this is simple economics, you sell ostentatious items as luxury and use the money to subsidize for the poor.when gorvernors are using private jet and a minister will be using business class,we want to stop corruption yet we create avenue for it .we need experienced men in this govt. or one day hey will say we all should start fasting to reduce the cost of food ,Our economy is not that bad,we still sell oil ,it is the management that is bad ,we don't know how to convert what we have to wealth, pls we are not all almajiris ,don't reduce us to Nigier republic .

  3. Some commentators lack knowledge of the subsatnce of discussion before they make their comments. Nobody has banned first class flight. The law simply say-Govt officials on official duties who use tax payers money for their "official" trips should not fly first class but Business class. If you wish to fly first class, do so from your pocket. In fact, they would have limit it to Economy class and if an official don't want that, let him/her resign.
