INEC declares elections in four Abuja councils inconclusive

The Independent National Electoral Commission on Sunday declared the election in Gwagwalada, Kuje, Abuja Municipal and Kwali area councils of the Federal Capital Territory inconclusive.

At the Abuja Municipal Area Council collation centre, the Returning Officer for the election, Prof. Sunday Ododo, explained that the election in the area council was declared inconclusive because the total number of cancelled votes cast, 15,560, was more than the margin between the two leading political parties.

He said that while Mr. Abdullahi Halilu of the All Progressives Congress got 26,602 votes, Mr. Bitrus Tanko of the Peoples Democratic Party polled 21,230 votes, giving a margin of 5,372 votes.

“For a winner to emerge, the margin should be in excess of the number of votes cancelled,” Ododo said.

“If you compare the margin between the winning party and the runner up party is lesser to the number of voters who could not cast their vote.

“For this reason, the AMAC chairmanship election is hereby declared inconclusive until election is conducted in affected pulling units.”

Meanwhile, INEC declared the candidates of the APC winners of the chairmanship elections in Abaji and Bwari area councils.

In Abaji, APC’s Alhaji Abdulrahman Ajiya was declared winner by the INEC Returning Officer in the area, Mr. Bayo Emmanuel.

Emmanuel said the APC candidate polled 12, 793 votes against his opponent, the incumbent chairman of the council, Alhaji Yahaya Garba Gawu of the PDP, who got 10, 076 votes.

“The APC candidate having satisfied the requirements of the electoral law and scored the highest votes is hereby declared the winner of the April 9, 2016 Council election in Abaji,” he said.

In Bwari, INEC returned APC’s Musa Dikko as winner of the chairmanship election after he polled 18,066 votes, as against his closest rival, PDP’s Andrew Gwani’s 13,279 votes.

As soon as Dikko was declared winner of the polls, there was jubilation within the area as many youths said to be supporters of APC took to the streets.

Some of them who moved in convoy drove round streets such as the Sabon-road, Action layout and Kuduru road among others displaying the APC flags in the process.
