Zero MW: Dear Ben Murray Bruce - 'This is not the first time'

A concerned Nigerian bothered by Senator Ben Bruce's wrong and inaccurate statements about Nigeria producing zero MW of electricity decided to write a public note to the senator, educating him about the power situation.

Dear Senator, System collapses happen all the time, you just don’t hear about it,or people just dont blow it out of proportion like you did.

Contrary to what You are claiming, In fact they happen so often there’s a running tally that shows they’ve actually been declining in recent years.

So, i am going to attempt to explain the system collapse that happened yesterday.

There was a trip on the one of the many transmission lines that transmit power to the discos from the Gencos, which resulted in loss of about 200MW of generation from the Ihovbor power station in Benin, At that instant, Load was higher than generation this caused a sudden decline in system frequency, culminated in a system Collapse.

This is the first time in my life that Nigeria or any other nation made history by producing zero MW of electricity! pic.twitter.com/frFmv9f7tL

— Ben Murray-Bruce (@benmurraybruce) March 31, 2016

Sir, Total grid generation at collapse inception was 3,196.0MW but you made it sound like generation could not happen and somehow the nation was not producing any power at all.

The low generation at the time was due to shortage of gas supply to generators. This was caused by saboteurs who damaged 2 critical lines, the Escravos Lagos Pipeline system and an export line at the Forcados Terminal.

Could you have used your media influence to dissuade vandals from their acts, No, instead you prefer to pray it into existence, or sponsor it, or whatever. Then you turn around and spread lies.

In case you still dont understand what a system collapse is, Think of the electric grid like several mountain climbers tied together climbing a mountain. One person falls, and pulls everyone down.
A system collapse is similar. Running the grid is an extremely delicate task, because one plant having issues can put the network in jeopardy.

This is common Sense, not your propaganda.

Dear Nigerians, dont be like Senator Bruce don’t fall for the Hype, I think Senator Bruce just wants to be Popular.

Oluwole Isaac.

  4. This regime came with a change mantra. They are the ones who should walk their talk not Ben. The fuel scarcity the darkness the job losses the inflation the exchange rate the hardship the persecution the fulani herdsmen the Biafra and shite massacre and worse still arrogance to Nigerians #abike, Buhari, shehu, amaechi and el rufai) the stories of missing monies that amount to nothing the unguarded utterance the foreign trips that are unnecessary.....Ask yourself before you hurry to defend. ...Is this a good change? Is it Ben we should be worried about? Should we worried?... by the way ...from your statistics, im sure you noticed Change is all about from 2009 - 2012 and 2013 - 2015....U Do the math and advise yourself..

  5. ..But the truth is that the formula for apc is: All promises + All Excuses +Cluelessness+ incompetence + lack of action= Extreme hardship and poverty and hunger in the Nation.

  9. Am surprise you folks bought into the bullshit Oluwole was saying here. Mr. Oluwole failed to mentioned what caused the trip that led to overload. According to Oluwole he said "Total grid generation at collapse inception was 3,196.0MW" where was the 3,196.0MW after the collapse? We were practically frozen. I don't see anything different from Senator Bruce statement. Is well known fact that the issue in the power industry in Nigeria is reliability. So don't be speaking as if you are a paid page boy here to copy and paste nonsense and to confuse gullible Nigerians.

    1. Mr Anonymous.
I think the explanation was simple enough. How it happened, and the fact that it actually happens less often than it used to. Evertime there is a total collapse of the transmission grid. Power cannot get to the Discos even though the generators are ready to produce power. Pls read the piece again before commenting.

    2. Its quite unfortunate that people like Mr Anonymous would disregard Oluwole's assertion about the collapse of power to 0 and believe the irrationality brought to Nigerians by @benmurrsybruce's #illpropagated #stupidconmonsense. I tire for Ben oooo. I think he has a plan to become the President one day, but he simply cant get Nigerians so cheap. I rest my case joooooor

  10. But really oga ben....Google is ur friend. U can always ask google...its not new in history. Even in devoloped and developing countries. Europe had same happened and it affected over 15 million poeple for 2hrs..india had same and it affected over 620million poeple.pls always get ur facts right b4 pasting such..what happened to d power loss is called grid cascade failure. We dont pride in that bcos with the right procedures and equilpment total collaps e may have been reduced isolating some of d major loads to rebalnce d load, but yo say it is the first time in history..i feel it really not needed....Constructvely lets heal Naija

  11. As respected as you are sir, and even seen as a role model by some youths, I will humbly appeal to you sir that you channel your energy into more progressive matters instead of jumping into every issue with very erroneous facts targeted at misleading the public and allowing yourself get bashed from quarters whose only means of ever communicating with you is via social media. This is common sense sir.

    1. Welcome Gerald, your comment is the best here. I admire and respect the senator, frankly, I'm not happy with the way people who ordinarily cannot speak to him are using social media to shred him here. The power situation has been terrible to say the least. And to crown it all, there's no fuel to power our Gen sets. #Wearenotsmiling

  13. Senator Ben Bruce is the voice of the people. What is bad is bad no matter how many times it occurs. If the collapses were not publicized then the people would not know hence our honorable senator did not know besides so many bad things have been following this regime called government and all these clueless sympathizer s should not insult a man they would never be like u til they die. Ride on my dear senator and shame the devil and his followers.

    1. You don't get the point. The Senator should not tell lies to be popular. That's the point.
A system collapse is common. It will still happen even when we generate 10,000 MW. It even happens in America where the fake Senator came from. It is a known fact and is publicly published by TCN.

    1. Nobody is happy with fuel scarcity and power failure. But Nigerians are saying Ben should not whip up sentiment for cheap publicity. He is not different from the other crooks in the National Assembly. Was he not in court to support Saraki at CCT. Instead of asking Saraki to step down to clear his name. Zuma just apologised after adverse court judgment. But Saraki knows he is guilty as charged and has been running from pillar to post to avoid trial.Shame on Ben's warp common sense philosophy

  18. Thanks for this enlightenment. But between you and the power Minister, who is right?
The minister said 4 turbines shutdown. 3 have been restored and one is been worked on. You are tying the collapse to a trip which occurred in a transmission line.
I am concerned. Definitely, it is not a matter of Government in power. Though this rubbing the Government with dirt at the slightest opportunity is APC's stock in trade.
My concern is that with the current world level in technology, I wonder why we have collapse so frequently in Nigeria as if it should be an everything fortnight experience combining partial and total collapses. It should be possible for the grid to do an automatic load shedding based on set priorities. This way total collapse should be something happening once in a decade occasioned by human error. I am sure advanced nations don't experience it the way we do. Proffesionals will need to come together, put politics aside and work out a power system devoid of epilepsy. I am sure Nigerians will gladly put such a blueprint together at no cost.

  19. Is the senator lying? I don't think so , if it happened in the past he probably did not know as we all did not know also, should he show a bit more tact , yes he should , mr Isaac I'm sure you are not supposed to put those figures out, all Nigerians need to know is that something is being done , period!

  20. Bruce has not contribute neither justify his salary as senator rather than complaints and launching of his book tag Common Sense which he himself don't even have.

What has he achieve in his little constituency so far?
What has he done to the oil pipe vandalism in his constituency so far?
What bill has he sponsor so far and how has he contributed to successful of such bill?
Buy made in Naija goods. How far?

If he can not manage his little constituency, he has no reason to condemn and criticize. Also not forget that he is part of the government and rise to responsibility of making things work.

It is common sense to do your responsibility
