Why we flogged protesting women in Delta - Nigerian Army

Nigerian Army Unit Commander stationed at Ovre-Eku community, Ethiope East Local Government Area, Delta State, Lt. E. D. Oworobo, has told a police source that the reason he ordered his men to flog the women who had embarked on a peaceful protest over a disputed land claimed by PRESCO Oil Company, was because they attempted to disarm his men.

Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai
Oworobo and his men of the 4th Brigade Command, Benin-City, Edo State, had last Wednesday, flogged and kicked hundreds of women protesting at Ovre-Eku (Iwevbo) community over a land which had been in dispute for years between Edo and Delta states.

The source who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that Oworobo had contacted the District Officer, DO, of Eku Police station, Mr. Andrew Efejedia, in an attempt to exonerate himself and his men of any wrong doing in the incident, where he claimed that he had no option than to order his men to use minimal force to disperse the protesters who had tried to disarm his men.

According to the source, Oworobo had asked the DO, “Don’t you know it is a crime to carry a charm according to the Criminal Code of Nigeria?”

Meanwhile, Lt. Oworobo has also threatened to deal with the Warri correspondents of The Authority and The Nation newspapers, Theophilus Onojeghen and Bolaji Ogundele, both of whom had contacted him to know what actually transpired between his men and the protesting women. The offence of the journalists was their temerity to contact him for the military’s side of the incident. In separate reactions to the journalists, an angry Lt Oworobo had described them as idiots and madmen, allegedly saying: “You’re an idiot. You’re a mad man. Why are you calling me? So I should report to you abi? Who are you to call me? If you ever call me in your life, I’ll deal mercilessly with you.”

  1. you are talking to DUNDEEES.This same officer will never try such a degradation in the north on northern women. Even a blind man killed or molested by the Nigerian army- was trying to disarm them. it is a shame that in this 21st century you guys still behave as you are still in West African frontier force. be it known to the army that every one can fire a gun, including fools. Time will surely tell.

  3. Women tried to disarm your men wonderful and they are not dead? Story for the gods. At the slightest provocation sometimes even without reason your men kill innocent civilian, and you just ordered they flog women who tried to disarm your men. Tell that to the birds.

  5. Why should some commentators turn this incident into an ethnic issues. Anonymous 6:48am has just missed the point. The officer involved should be sanctioned irrespective of where he hails from and insinuating that this will not happen in a particular part of the country shows a parochial minded person. The killing of Islamic movement happened where? Heavens knows what people like Anonymous7:58Am would have said if it was people of other faith in the Southern part of the country who were slaughtered by the Military under the command of a Nothern military officer. We should not put sentiments in everything thT we do and always call a spade a spade and not give a dog a bad name because we want to kill it.

  7. Mr. Bruratai, how many Boko Haram and northern insurgents have u been able to flogged. It is only in the south-south that these hegoats from the north called in the name of army will molest innocent people who justifiably protect for their right.

I see so much intimidation and injustice in the land since the assumption of APC government. Very soon we will be molested for not understanding Hausa language.
