UNILAG Muslim students protest

Members of the University of Lagos (UNILAG) Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria (MSSN) on Wednesday protested what they called “sustained proscription” of the body by the management. The activities of the Society were suspended last year, following an internal crisis among members.

After months of failed promise by the management to restore the association, the Muslims students staged a peaceful protest to show their concern on the matter.

The demonstration started at the school mosque at 8:00am. Tajudeen Akolade, who led the protest, said it was injustice to withhold the activities of the association. The demonstrators gave the management 72-hour ultimatum to call the MSSN members for a congress.

He explained that the crisis started about two years ago, during the Faruq Musodiq-led regime during which some students wrote an anonymous letter to the management claiming the association had sidelined them.

The petition was followed by complaints, which prompted the management to set up a panel. The school panel was presided over by Luqman Adams.

Akolade said: “We want congress to be called within 72 hours to address our members on what is happening. We want to elect our executive members, who will administer the affairs of the Society. We don’t want imposed leadership and let MSSN enjoy what other students’ association enjoy on campus.”

Addressing the protesters, the Dean of Students Affairs (DSA), Prof. Tunde Babawale, assured the Muslim students of the management’s commitment to restore the Society. Babawale assured the protesters that there would be a congress on March 26, where further steps would be taken on how to restore the body.
