Nigeria’s membership of Islamic coalition not religious – Foreign Affairs Minister

Foreign Affairs Minister, Mr. Geoffrey Onyema has said that the membership of Nigeria in the Saudi Arabia led Islamic Coalition against terrorism has not religious connotations.

He said it was a strategic move to completely rid Nigeria of terrorist attacks having suffered a victim for a long time.

It will be recalled that President Buhari had in an interview with Aljazeera television over the weekend confirmed that Nigeria had joined the coalition.

According to the Minister who spoke to the State House Correspondent after a private meeting with president Mohammadu Buhari at the presidential Villa, Abuja on Monday said that since the terrorists hide under the cloak of Islamic religion to perpetrate crimes, it was natural for the Islamic countries to show that they were anti-terrorism.

"It has nothing to do with religion as far as Nigeria is concerned. We have to look at what the objective is. We face terror challenges and its a global phenomenon.

"Unfortunately, the problem we have today is that some of the terrorists groups are claiming some of the things they are doing is in the name of a particular religion and it is clear to everybody that this is not the case which is obviously a concern to people of Islamic faith and Islamic countries that their religion should be so abused.

"So, there is naturally a tendency to show that this has nothing to do with Islam. Terrorism has nothing to do with Islam. Islamic countries, Islamic people want to be seen as being in the forefront of the battle against these terrorists to show also that it has absolutely nothing to do with religion.

"That's what this is all about. So, we are supporting every move to achieve this, to disabuse people's minds that some of these terrorists are speaking in the name of Islam or are Islamic or that there's anything about Islamic teaching that somehow condones these barbaric actions.

"I think it's something we should all get together and we should all support whoever is working towards it. And that's what this coalition is for, to show too that we are a Muslim country, we are Muslims and these people do not speak for islam, have nothing to do with islam.

"Most of the victims of these people are Muslims if you look at it. So, that's what it is.

"It has nothing to do with Nigeria, Christianity, Islam. I think the media should really get the main message across", he said.

  2. It either this man is ignorant, deceptive or purely being mischievious. His excuse here is, at best, lame. According to him "islamic countries" are coming together to fight terrorism. Is Nigeria an islamic country? Are US, UK, etc not fighting terrorism? Why are they not included in the list of the "islamic countries" to fight terrorism? It is not compulsory to be "islamic" country to fight terrorism. The use of the name "islamic countries" is symbolic and deliberate. Nigerians would know better someday, but I pray it is not too late then.

  7. Last time Governor Fayose raised alarm that Buhari want to islamise Naija, he was nocked down. Today the minister of foreign affairs ONYEMA, who went with him came out to affirmed their trips mission . It's really unfortunate that the core values and cultural heritage that bind the coexistence and habitation of our great country Nigeria is being treaten. Somebody should remind said Baba that Nigeria is a heterogeneous religion background and each part should be respected accordingly. Glad!

  8. Mike God bless you. It's very clear that Nigeria being made up of Christians and Muslims is now an Islamic country. What is the fate of Christians? Deception before our eyes! If they say it has nothing to do with Islam then I ask, what is membership? Do we really have House members, Governors, in fact the makers and interpreters of law? Are they aware of these things? Every strategy you hear is a gradual move until everyone is converted to Islam by omission or commission. Again, if terrorism is a threat to this country, who is giving all these Fulani herdsmen AK47? And we watch them killing people in the middle belt. NIGERIANS! OPEN YOUR EYES!

  9. Some people are so daft and holier than thou syndrome that they cannot even see light in anything good. Who cares as far as peace is brought to reign in our society. Is America, Japan, Russia, China etc called christianic,Islamic, Hindustan, or otherwise country? Who stopped OBJ, GEJ as they visited holy lands those days, when GEJ voted against Palestinians who cares. Where is Oritsajafor today, are there no Christians in the North again? Let's move this country forward and stop being bigotic. A Muslim will ever remain Muslim and Christians alike. Nobody can force religion in any country/body. They waited and couldn't found PMB wanting religiously in his appointments and even minority christian in the North are favoured, a gesture minority Muslims in the South have never enjoyed during OBJ and GEJ. enough is enough.

  11. It is unfortunate that this Minister is of Ibo decent and a 'Christian'to be making this lame case for his pay master.Mr President in the said interview affirmed that Nigeria is a member of this Islamic coalition. Please is Nigeria now an Islamic state? Must we become a member of a religiously tinted body before we can fight terrorism? Mr PRESIDENT should know that this country is not an Islamic country rather a circular state and should not administer it as if he is administering his household. We are watching with keen interest every of his move and would respond appropriately before it is too late to do so. If a matter such as this with its sensitive bearing on the collective sensibilities of Nigerians should not be debated first by the National Assembly before being heard in Aljazeera then this Democracy is a DISASTER and the actor at the centerpiece a huge joke.

  13. The man called Buhari is united forces with Islam to turn Nigeria to an Islamic country. Very soon he will be deploying Islamic troops to all the villages in Nigeria to brutally molest, silence and enslave us. Those who have eyes but cannot see will not be able to discern the sign. If we fail to talk as Nigerians we will live to bear the brunt of the pain. Pls let's do something fast before we enter a journey of no return. MAY GOD HELP US TO REVOLT AGAINST BUHARI AND HIS EVIL INTENT.
