Nigerians blast Senate for rejecting bill that seeks to make Nigerian women equal to men

Several Nigerians have taken to social media to attack the Nigerian Senate for voting against the Gender and Equal Opportunity Bill.

The bill on Tuesday failed to pass second reading when it was put to vote at the sitting.

The bill, which was presented for consideration by Senator Biodun Olujimi, PDP, Ekiti South, incur the wrath of senators, mainly from the Northern part of the country, who did not only slam those behind it but also described it as anti-Islam.

Majority of the senators voted against the bill which seeks to promote equality, development and advancement of all persons in Nigeria.

If the bill was passed, it would have guaranteed women’s freedom of movement, female economic activity and girls’ access to education.

  2. Well the senate have really done a very wonderful job by not passing the bill. Assuming they did, then don't be surprise to come back and your wife will ask you to go into the kitchen and cook for her. Because they will surely misuse that right of equality.

  3. That a poor fellow got the change to dine wt a rich man this day doesn't make him not remember where he belongs.I think it's wrong to vote against gender equality cos we all are conceived and born same way.that's my own.

THIS LAW COULD BE ABUSED IF PASSED. IT WOULD ONLY BE A GOOD THING IF THE LAW HAS EXCEPTIONS TO CERTAIN EQUALITY.IN ALL THIS IS AFRICA WERE A WOMANS HONOUR IS BLESSED A HOME MAKER. IF THIS LAW IS PASSED, WHO DOES BECOMES THE HOME MAKER. LETS BE FRANK. THIS LAW ISNT GONNA BE PASSED BECAUSE NO MAN WANTS HIS EGO OR AUDACITY TUSSLED WITH. JUSTSAYING.....

  5. Just a question please. Is there any law in the Nigerian constitution today or in our national lives standing against women? What is this bill supposed to address?

    1. Very good question. Put differently, women are looking to be superior not equal. Already men are cheated out on matters where the law does not provide for the possibility of a woman agresser. Example is that a woman is rarely ever said to have sexually harassed, seduced or assaulted a man. But this happens is very large scale and the man knowing his fate cannot even report or complain.

  6. Some Nigerian men and women are so engrossed that they do not know the difference between gender equality and gender equal opportunity. Please, there is nothing like gender equality-this goes to silly people. Talk about gender equal opportunity-this goes to educated people. People should stop talking on issues that will rubbish the Bible or the Quaran. Ordinary World Bank Empowerment Programme being promoted by the United Nations "Gender Equal Opportunity has turned to Gender Equality in Nigeria" Why is it that school pass through a lot of Nigerian who should have passed through school.

  7. It is not the Nigerian Senate but APC that betrayed the Nigerian women. Do you really think Buhari beleives in equality between men and women? It is a PDP sponsored bill, struck down by APC. Wake up!

  8. Wait a minute. What do women really want?? What rights are they denied of? So until you usurp the right of men in addition to yours which men never contest with you, you will not be satisfied. I pity these men who don't know that man and woman are not the same and their duties and the duties of a woman differs.

  9. It will be foolish to think man and woman are equal. As long as they have biological differences they can never be equal. This is God's design! But equal gender opportunity is a must! If a woman proves better than her male counterpart in anything she must be recognized and respected for it and not be underrated because she's a woman. An engineer is an engineer, it doesn't matter whether she's a woman, she deserve all the respect that can be given to a man. But by God, she is not equal to a man, she must still go back home and respect her husband as the head of the family. Go to the west where they think they are equal to men, you see divorcees and single mothers all over and the offspring grew up to end up in jails or live with distorted reality.
