Nigeria using guerrilla tactic to defeat Boko Haram – Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Tukur Buratai

The Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Tukur Buratai, has said that the Nigerian Army recorded huge success in the fight against Boko Haram because it now adopts the same strategy used by the insurgents to attack Nigeria.

Buratai also said during a courtesy to the Oyo State Governor Abiola Ajimobi that the Nigerian Army added more capacity and ability to its operations with the introduction of motorbike battalion, which enabled it to move quickly to areas where the terrorists were located before they could cause havoc.

Buratai also said that the political will of President Muhammadu Buhari to defeat the terrorists, the leadership of the Nigeria Army and the resilience of the troops were the secret behind the successes recorded so far by the army.

He said, “We are using the same guerrilla strategy adopted by the terrorists. We are giving them back their own strategy. We have motorbike battalion which has added more capacity as well as the ability to move quickly to wherever the terrorists are.

“We have intensified a number of actions that will help the troops get to the terrorists before they run out of their hideout or cause any havoc. To totally wipe out Boko Haram, we require the support of everybody. They live among us and are everywhere and we require very good intelligence to fish them out. But the most important thing is to prevent them from having the capacity to launch attacks on innocent individuals and on our troops’ location.”

Buratai also commended the professionalism displayed by the troops in the troubled regions of the country and the support of all Nigerians, adding that more was needed to be done to completely wipe out the terrorists.

“But in the long run, we require long term planning, long term surveillance, long term intelligence gathering so that the remnants can be picked from here and there apart from those who show up with their weapons which we are dealing with right now.”

In his address, Governor Ajimobi, who was represented by the state deputy governor, Moses Adeyemo, commended the Nigerian Army for the efforts at upholding the unity of the country. He said the first priority of his government was security of lives and property, on which infrastructural development thrived.

“The purpose of governance is to maintain peace and security after which every other thing would follow in terms of infrastructural development. And our government is committed to sustaining the peace in the state,” he said.
