Jonathan didn’t call me for 19 days after Chibok girls’ abduction - Borno governor

Borno State Governor Kashim Shettima said yesterday that ex- President Goodluck Jonathan did not call him for 19 days after the abduction of the Chibok girls, almost two years ago.

He spoke yesterday when ex-President Olusegun Obasanjo, who is on a two-day visit to the University of Maiduguri, visited him at the Government House.

Shettima said Obasanjo would have handled the issue differently were he the president at that time.

“In our case, Your Excellency, after the Chibok abduction of over 200 schoolgirls in April, 2014, it took 19 days for me to receive a call from the Presidency,” he said.

“I brought this mainly to show the difference, because we will only appreciate scenarios when we make comparisons.”

Shettima hailed Obasanjo for having a hands-on to issues when he was president. ”Someone even told me that as President, Baba Obasanjo had phone numbers of traditional rulers and resident heads of security establishments in states that were prone to crisis and he sometimes spoke with them directly to get firsthand information.

“Without crisis, he created time to call traditional rulers to make enquiries about communal stability, ethno-religious co-existence and community policing in order to forestall problems. In our case, Your Excellency, after the abduction of over 200 schoolgirls in Chibok in April, 2014, it took 19 days for me to receive a call from the Presidency. I brought this mainly to show the difference, because we will only appreciate scenarios when we make comparisons.”

Obasanjo, who arrived in Maiduguri about 11 am, visited Shettima at the Government House.

The governor said Monday’s visit was the former president’s first call at the Borno Government House since 1976.

Obasanjo, who praised the Borno State governor, urged the Federal Government to embark on detailed research to document the Boko Haram insurgency for posterity to learn from.

The ex-president hailed President Muhammadu Buhari for his efforts to end the Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast.

“I know that he (Buhari) is concerned about the insurgency. He has got it right that first of all there must be military ascendency over the insurgents,” he said.

“I do travel a lot in Africa and outside Africa. Where I have gone in recent times, what the people wanted to know is how Nigeria is coping with the situation of insurgency.

“I think we are not out of the woods yet, but it appears we can see the light beyond the tunnel,” Obasanjo said.

  3. Did the Governor on his own call the president instead of waiting for the president to call? Abi the Governor no get credit?
Did the governor fail to call and instead was counting number of days so that he can place blame?
Every idiot knows that the school shouldn't have opened in the light of the Boko Haram rampage at that time

  4. Did you call him? Mr Blane game! One year after Jonathan left office is enough for you to produce them.

  5. And so what? The president did not call you and you decided not to call or visit him. What role did you play as the chief security of your state? When the security report says waec should not be held in that school what was your response? What happened to the male students in that school before the incident or is the school a female school? Why was there no light in the school and no one to put on the generator the night the abduction happened? Why was there no enough security guard on duty except one aboki? Where we're all the hostel warders the night of the abduction? Where we're the relatives and wards of the staff of the school that same night and many more questions begging for candid answers from you Mr governor or What effort did you make on your own to rescue these children but rather you were waiting to put the blame on the president in other for you to score political point. Just a reminder, when some students were abducted recently in Lagos, did the governor waited for the president or sprung into action using all at his disposal ? But posterity will judge us all in that we do.

  6. All those chibok things are propaganda against Dr Goodluck.
I don't know what these people are looking for in Dr Jonathan's hands.
Shettima, leave it, if it were Mr Obasanjo that told you not to open school then, he will turn around and give you a pat in the back. Sycophants. God will surely disgrace all that trouble this nation.

  8. We that leaved in maidiguri before being driving away by them knew that the certain elders in Borno knew about the disappearance before hand. All these where political tools to discredit Jonathan at that time. One thing for sure every act and sins of man must be visited by God. The day of vengeance is coming on all those evil doers who intend to waste the lives of innocent children in the name of politics.

  10. Shetima, you should be ashamed of yourselves of your incompetency in handling your state as the chief security officer of the state.Don't you know that you are the chief custodian of the state? You are to be blamed for the student's abduction and not Dr Goodlock Jonathan. You were expected to swing into action immediately and then call him(Jonathan) for help instead, you were waiting for him to call you.You are very stupid for saying that.Had your daughter been involved, u would not wait for 19 days for Dr Jonathan to call you.

In fact serving government officials should not be permitted to send their children to school abroad henceforth.PMB, Sir pls take note.
