JAMB candidates protest at Lagos Assembly + Video

Scores of candidates of the last Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), who stormed the Lagos State House of Assembly Tuesday to protest alleged maltreatment by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in the examination, threw stones at the security gate and personnel manning the gate in the Assembly to ventilate their anger after waiting for hours without being attended to by the lawmakers.

Watch video below...

Some of the students, who were angered by the failure of the speaker or any lawmaker in the Assembly to attend to them in time were molested and arrested by members of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), who had been mobilised to prevent them from entering the Assembly premises.

The students sang solidarity songs to register their anger with the authority of JAMB and the Assembly.

The over 200 candidates, who wrote this year’s Unified Tertiary Matriculation  Examination called for the removal of  Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, Director of Joint Admission Matriculation Board (JAMB) over the alleged mismanagement of UTME examination during the protest to the Assembly.

One of the affected candidates, Okelola Samson said that he read rigorously for the examination, but that JAMB gave him 170 marks which was against his expectation.

According to him, for the past two weeks, JAMB has been sending results that was not in tandem with our expectations. We expected good result but we were disappointed at the management with the series of marks they were sending to our phones.

“I am sure 170 was not my score and I am using this opportunity to call on the House of Assembly and the Federal Government to investigate this hiccup with JAMB,” he pleaded.

It was gathered that other protesting candidates shouted at the frontage of the Assembly that Prof. Dibu must leave as the Director of JAMB.

Another candidate, Adebisi Shonupe also shared his experience, and said that all the efforts put into the exam proved abortive with the action of JAMB.

“Dibu is marking down candidates to pave way for private universities and also deduct the scores of the candidates at his own discretion. We also received some of our results before we write the exam,” the candidates said.

According to them, JAMB changed exam venues without proper notification and over 10,000 candidates missed the UTME exam. He is also selling change of institution and change of course e-card, while the exam was still in progress.

The inscription on the placards included: “My system went off and nothing was done. Kilode! You all have children.”

The Director of Next Level Academy, Abayomi Arowolo, who was an instructor to the candidates, said what JAMB did was injustice.

“After the candidates finished the examinations, JAMB added 40 marks to their scores and later removed it from the candidates’ scores. Some of the candidates are still writing the exam, so the Commission should be called to order.”

The House of Assembly had not attended to the students as the time of filling this story.

  1. Insensitivity of Nigerian government to the plights of the masses... The lawmakers would have attended to them if they were some of their praise-singers. Yeye government. Well, as events are unfolding...

  2. Government should not pay deaf ears to the plight of these students. My cousin who wrote in Erudite Future Cidatel,Eligbolu, Port Harcourt had similar issues. Her system delayed before booting and even when it eventual did come up,the questions were 'disarranged'.As all these were going on,her time was already far spent until the hall attendant came to her assistance .She ended up scoring less than 150. I therefore plead for cancellation of the 2016 JAMB UTME.

  3. Jamb 2016 is a flop.My daughter wrote her exams in the 29th of Febuary at erudite glory citadel.when she entered her computer didn't come up and she was assigned from the bigger hall which had about 100 people to a small room where there were about 5 people.intially all the computers were having problems so the examiners stayed in the big hall trying to sort out the problem not paying attention to those in the smaller room until when they were through with the big hall.when they finally came to the small room by which time the people in the hall had started,my daughters computer didn't start up and had to be restarted up a number of times for quite some time.when the computer started the english questions , the register in particular was disarranged there were different options in the register from that of the options, she called the attention of the examiner he told her to proceed with the other questions that its still loading and should come back to it later. in the course of the exam a guy came in and annouced to us to pay 1000 each for academic assisstance ,use of our personal calculator and technical assisstance or else if any thing happens we are on our own. she didn' t pay for any . she was just about to enter english which was one of her best subject when the computer suddenly closed up when her time had not run up. she complained to the examiners and they told her that the time started counting from the first person that started. INCREDIBLE !!!!! The cbt standard world wide is to follow your computers timing not anothers!!how is it my daughters fault that her computer malfunction made her not to start with others , it is the duty of the organisers to ensure thatvthe computers are in good condition so all students would start at the same time. this is the height of inefficiency you start students with different timing entirely due to your own fault(poor facilities) and end them the same time. i call on jamb to address this matter and uphold their image.my daughter was not given a condusive environ to write her exams , her result is totally unacceptable to me!!

  4. Shame on those complaining. This is a country where people gain admission through protest, write exams through protest, get their degrees through protest and arms twisting of the school authorities, due their NTSC through protect and practice their profession by protest. Therefore give me the reason why I should submit my life to today's Nigerian trained so called gaddem doctor? Nigerians now always want shortcut or easy way out.And parents are supporting their children in this? She parents boast gleefully that their children became doctors at the age of 24 or so but same people jet out to India to treat Malaria. That is why Jamb and Nuc should not be intimidated or arm twisted by anybody. Kudos to nuc on the new policy on trading of medical students.

  5. This is not the first time issues will arises during JAMB exams. The issues should be addressed. Not saying the whole exams should be cancelled. What of others that passed???? These student should have protested immediately after writing theexams. Is it not possible that many of these students paid for special centres and had their hopes high that they will pass no matter what. We know the Nigeria we are today. Even parents will encourage their children to cheat. 2016 JAMB shouldn't be cancelled at all. Rather, the issues raised by these students should be addressed. Thanks.
