Housemaids, artisans to pay taxes in Lagos - LIRS

Mr Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, the Chairman of the Lagos Internal Revenue Service (LIRS), disclosed on Tuesday that the tax office had widened its tax net to include domestic workers, house maids and artisans.

The chairman claimed that the new tax regime was in concord with Gov. Akinwunmi Ambode administration’s inclusion of every resident to the growth of the state.

Mr Ogunsanwo who revealed this at the Alausa office, said that the agency had begun the process of overhauling the informal sector with a view to ensuring voluntary compliance by all tax payers.

He also said the agency had identified three categories of tax payers in the sector. According to him, they include market men/women, artisans, micro, small and medium-scale enterprises and domestic staff.

He commented that these categories of people were expected to remit one per cent of what they earned to government’s coffers.

The tax master claimed that the taxes collected will augment government revenue at a time when federal allocations have drastically reduced due to the fall in oil prices.

The chairman also said that a tax guide will be published and translated into pidgin and Yoruba for all to understand.

  2. Is this a fall out of the Mile 12 clashes. It seems like a recrimination.

  3. This is the dumbest of all decisions. So with all the money that Lagos state government is making from motor parks, sea ports, markets and the rest of them, it is not enough for them to run the state. Now they want to start robbing even house maids. Fashola where are you? See as they are trying to rubbish the Lagos that you painstakingly rebuilt. Pls, intervain.

  4. I am aware that Nigeria economic situation is not good but why must poor masses bear the brunt of mistakes of our leaders. How is the government or this administration going to calculate the tax for domestic workers, house maids and artisans. In Europe. One pays tax as he/she earns. This administration will end up mapping out one figure that have no basis and require people to pay and call it tax. They will in turn give the contracts to collect these taxes to their friends companies thereby encouraging corruption. May Almighty God save us all.

  5. This change no bi small thing o, Nigeria don reach where den they go, especially in Lagos, the way Ambode is chasing people about tax issue is nothing to write home about, they will even add unexistence names in the list of companies, while they will now send millions of money to those companies for invading tax. At times i wonder what the past and present government has done positively to the people of Nigerians, but they want to take from the poor masses and their labour forcefully, but one thing i know the judgement of God is sure no one will escape it, so you guys ride on...
