Fulani herdsmen invade BRT lane in Lagos

Lagos is having its own share of this misdemeanor of the Fulani herdsmen, as they are starting to take their cattle through the Bus Rapid Transport, BRT lane along Ikorodu road, Lagos, constituting traffic hazards to motorists, BRT buses and other road users.

Last week, several cow and their herdsmen were spotted on the Ajegunle axis, and a few days ago, they were also spotted at the Itowolo axis blocking traffic flow on the BRT corridor. We gathered that the timely intervention of the Kick Against Indiscipline, KAI officials saved the situation.

Reacting to the development, members of the House of Assembly took turn to condemn the act and calling for drastic action to taken against the herdsmen. In a motion moved by the Majority leader Sanai Agunbiade, he noted that cattle rearers now take to BRT lanes which has no grass to graze for their cattle, between Owode Onirin and Mile 12 at noon. Agunbiade said “Surprisingly I saw some Fulani herdsmen taking their cattle on Bus Rapid Transit, BRT, lane in Ikorodu around 10pm and someone on internet shared a picture of same act along Mile12/ Owode Onirin also in Ikorodu in broad day.”

He also stated that there was the need to call the attention of the government and relevant agencies, particularly, the BRT monitoring team to put an end to this ugly development. Hon. Wahab Jimoh who represents Apapa Constituency I reiterated that the Fulani are also grazing at Mobil Road in Apapa and they are also slaughtering cows in an unauthorized places in the area.

“There is the need to use the necessary law to penalize them.” Meanwhile the House resolved to call on the Governor Mr. Akinwunmi Ambode to direct necessary agencies to enforce the state traffic law that will check the movement of cows particularly on the BRT lane, while,

Commissioner for Information and Strategy should intensify awareness campaign in Yoruba, Hausa and Igbo languages on movement of cows on our major roads, as well as using only authorized abattoirs in the state.

  1. The Lagos state government should not give the fulani herdsmen chance of moving their cattle along BRT lane. This is not north. They can do what ever they like in the north not in Lagos

    1. @anonymous6:29am, so it is okay for these Fulani herdsmen to take over areas in the North & kill peaceful farmers/sack whole farming communities as revenge for cattle rustling? The death of one Agatu child means nothing because the child is not Yoruba? How is your worldview different from these marauders?

  3. That is part of the change now. They are above the law. Lagodians never see anything self! The will soon occupy the Gani Fawehmi park and no body can do anything. Try to force their cattle out and they will recreate mile 12 mayhem. It was Olu False the other day and only Oduamakin spoke out other Yoruba so called leaders all kept quite because of political correctness. The can even take their cattle's into government properties in Ikeja and Alausa and nothing anyone can do.It is in the spirit of change.Baba Fayose and Fani Kayode saw all these and had spoken and pointedbit out but politicians felt it was politics. It will now dawn on them when they start to sack people from their land in Lagos and other south western states just like they have been doing in Benue Nasarawa plateau Taraba. They have also extended it to Delta Enugu and Ebonyi. It is now the time of the South west . It is in the spirit of merger and change ooo! No one should complain.

  4. This is rather unfortunate. The proliferation of the Fulani herdsmen in the south west and their destructive moves all over Nigerian is uncalled for. The only solution is a federal government policy to stop this because any local or state action may likely turn to another Fulani war. God help Nigerian. God bless Nigerian. Shalom

  6. The cost of cows in the market is between N170k - N350k depending on the size.
A dirty looking fulani hersdman with a thousand cows on patrol is worth several billions of naira...and he will kill anyone to protect his wealth.
Individuals are warned not to challenge this wandering cattle merchants as they are illiterate and very deadly..The govt has promised to import grasses for them from Brazil in this 2016 budget.

  8. Why are the Lagos State House of Assembly members stressed? When you were making alliance with Buhari to support him with everything you have didn't you realize that he is the Life Patron of Miyeti Allah? How can you support Buhari and not support his people? Please leave the herds alone, they are going for a meeting with their allies in Bourdillon Street.
