He made the remark when he paid a sympathy visit to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje at the Government House, Kano.
He described the incident as “very unfortunate, considering the monumental losses incurred by victims in the inferno.’’
The former President, who also used the occasion to condole with Ganduje over the death of his mother, prayed God to replenish the victims of the fire disaster.
He said, “God knows why He allowed things to happen, but let us hope that there will be benefit from this monumental disaster. That is my wish and prayer.
“On behalf of myself, family and close friends who share my sentiment about this country, accept our condolences.’’
Responding, Ganduje said the state government had set up a fund raising committee to collect donations from individuals and organisations to assist the victims.
He also said that the state government had planned to relocate the traders to enable it to reconstruct the market.
“What has happened is very unfortunate but we have to lay a good foundation to prevent a recurrence,’’ he said.
He commended the former President for the visit, stressing that “Obasanjo is man of everybody.’’
YABATECH reopens, begins semester exams today
The Yaba College of Technology, Lagos, on Tuesday reopened for academic activities after a four-week break to mourn a final year student, Miss Comfort Dazan .
Dazan died on February 10.
A correspondent of the News Agency of Nigeria, who monitored the resumption, reports that anxious students trooped in to complete their undertaking forms and collected examination dockets.
NAN reports that security was beefed-up on campus, as only students with the institution’s identity cards were allowed in.
Some students were seen rushing to their various course supervisors to submit undertaking forms and were collecting their examination dockets.
In a female hostel, Akada hall, scores of students were seen queuing up for allocation of bed spaces.
An ND II, Business Administration student, Miss Adebamigbe Fadaini, told NAN that she was very happy to be back on campus.
Fadaini said she spent the break to read and prepare hard for the examination.
