Florence Omagbemi has been named the interim head coach of the Super Falcons by the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).
The choice of the former Super Falcons captain and defender was approved by the NFF executive board on Tuesday following the recommendation of its Technical and Development Committee.
The Falcons have been without a substantive coach since the team failed to qualify for the Rio Olympics last year. Erstwhile acting coach Christopher Danjuma was sacked after he failed to win a medal at the All African Games in Brazaville in September 2015.
Omagbemi will be in charge of the reigning African champions until the appointment of a yet to be named foreign coach.
According to the NFF, the appointment of an expatriate will be finalized in time to halt the country’s recent slide in women’s football.
Florence Omagbemi, was one of the amazons in Nigeria’s women football featuring in four different FIFA Women’s World Cup from China 1991 to USA 2003.
She was a member of the golden generation of the Super Falcons that reached the second round at USA 1999, where Nigeria narrowly lost the semifinal ticket to Brazil.
She led the Falcons to win the AWC title in 1998, 2000, 2002 and 2004 and also led the team to appear for the first time at Sydney 2000 Olympics Game.
The 41-year-old has coached several American youth teams and previously served as the assistant coach to the Nigerian U20 women team, at Japan 2012 FIFA U20 Women's World Cup, where the country lost in the semifinal to the USA.
Omagbemi will be assisted by former Super Falcons duo of four-time African queen, Perpetua Nkwocha, Ann Chiejine while Bala Mohammed retained his post as goalkeeper trainer.
Her assignment will begin against either Guinea or Senegal in the second round qualifying match of the 2016 Africa Women Cup of Nations in April.
Omagbemi will hope to lead the Falcons to continental success at the biennial football showpiece billed for Cameroon from November 19 to December 3 this year. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday
