Morocco activates the world’s biggest solar panel

The King of Morocco, His Majesty Mohammed VI, has officially opened the first phase of what will eventually be the largest global CSP plant - the same size as Morocco’s capital city Rabat.

The world's biggest solar power plant , Noor-Ouarzazate has been activated in the city of Ouarzazate in Morocco.

The Plant, that will power 1 million homes in the next two years, is also visible from space. The King of Morocco, His Majesty Mohammed VI, has officially opened the first phase of what will eventually be the largest global CSP plant - the same size as Morocco’s capital city Rabat.

According to engineers, once Noor I, Noor II and Noor III are up and running, they will be reducing carbon emissions by 760 000 tons per year, which could result in an estimated reduction of over 17.5 million tons of carbon emissions over 25 years!

It will also put Morocco in a position to sell power to the U.S.

The process, simply put, works like this: Sun rays hit the solar power plant's mirrors, heating up a liquid. This liquid, mixed with water, then reaches temperatures of up to 400°C. Steam produced from this heated water facilitates a turbine which then produces energy

. For the energy to be stored and used on cloudy days, or at night, a cylinder of salt melts by the warmth of the mirrors during the day and stays hot enough to produce power for up to three hours at night.

  1. Is this another gold rush? Oyibo will always look for avenue to make money and exploit others. By the time you spend three time the cost of installing and running the thing withing a short time in maintain it you will realise the truth about this technology called Solar inverters. Even reach European and American country still find it difficult and expensive to run in large scale. They are just using this as experiment cos they have been looking for alternative to fossils fuel. It is all about capitalistic tendency to exploit the weak.If these nations still find it difficult to run this technology in big scale due to the cost, is it the poor nation that cannot feed their citizens that can afford them? For for example, check out rechargeable torches, you understand that it is use and dumb. They are just interested in the volume they can produce and sell. Think of the impact of the waste on the environment. They simply do not care, rather they prepare how th ey can take care of their own environment with the money from these dumbed goods in poor countries. It is unfortunate.

    1. Don't be so cynical. This solar energy panels might work and solve the age long problem of power shortage as well as carbon emission. Life is about trying. Morocco might be showing the entire world the way

    2. Chai....see how people fail exams! Mr. Uja above, go back & read the article properly. There are no inverters, & batteries involved here. The solar mirrors heat up a liquid to 400 degrees Celsius, that is mixed then mixed with water, to produce steam, which drives a turbine that in turn produces electricity. So where did you see inverter please??!!

  2. That's very true Uja. The developed nations will never do away with fossil fuel cos its the best source of stable power supply. Though with bad environmental credential, it does not produce as much waste as the renewable energy they are advocating to the developing nations. Out of ignorance we Patronise this use and dump products that emit harmful substances that contaminate our environment without remediation. Because they know when the problems start, we will still run to them for solution.

I think its time developing nature wake up from their slumber and be environmental conscious. With fossil fuel they have stable power supply that never goes off. They never subscribe to renewable because of the adverse impact on the environment. They only put up a samples to deceive fools. They are more advanced in technology but why is it very difficult for them to change to renewable overnight if it is as pure as they claim?

  3. This is wisdom displayed in Morocco. Solar panels can stay for 25 years with very minimal maintenance. Anyone wanting to invest personally to power your homes and commercial centres. Kindly call on Hay.Kez Tech-08064183478

    1. There is sense in Uja's comment. You'll agree with me that every product has it advantages and disadvantages. Just imaging the land coverage for the solar plant, other sides of its environmental impact and the cost of procurement and maintenance which was not mentioned, just to power on million houses. Although there is no harm in venturing into new technologies but i see this as promoting more a product line. I think if men could concur the moon and are still moving ahead, with more research the so carbon emission from fossil fuel can be curtailed. It is just that our government is not investing in research. Imagine the future of African and other continent that depend largely on fossil fuel for their survival. If Africa doesn't sit up, the developed countries will bring anything on the table for their meal. For business men, all you just look at is profitability. Please let us think deeper.
