A middle aged man, Friday James, was Wednesday sentenced to death by hanging by a Lagos High Court, sitting in Ikeja.
Justice Oluwatoyin Ipaye handed down the death sentence after finding the convict guilty of a two count charge of armed robbery preferred against him by the office of the Lagos State Directorate of Public Prosecution.
The prosecution team led by Chief State Prosecutor, Akin George, had accused the convict of the offence of conspiracy to commit armed robbery, and armed robbery.
George he told the court that the convict robbed one Olanrewaju of her jewelleries worth N100,000.
He also accused the convict of inflicting injuries on the head and hand of the husband of the victim through the use of machetes and guns.
The prosecutor said the convict committed the offence, on February 17, 2012 around 3 a.m. at Ewegbemi Street, Meiran, Ajasa Command within Ikeja.
The offence, according to the prosecution is contrary to Section 297 Criminal law of Lagos State 2011, and Section 295 subsection 2(a).
When the charged were read to him on arraignment in 2012, James had pleaded not guilty to the two count charge preferred against him by the DPP.
But the trial judge declared that the prosecution has proved his case beyond reasonable doubt.

What a country. Hanging a man for 100,000 naira while people who stole our country dry are still roaming the street as kings. God dey na poor man prayer.

Because of 100,000 you sentence him to death.hun what about Dasuki,Olisa mettu,Amusan and others that stoles billion if Nigerian money,are they not worth of death sentence? But they are still moving freely.how many of Nigerian that are dying daily,monthly and yearly due to what this people's embezzled?are they not inflicting injuries on Nigerian? Many questions to asked.hope Ipaye not under a spell?u supposed to handle Dasuki Gate and Fayose saga.

ReplyDeleteWhere are pdp members and fan to defend dis man, after all he is someone husband, father or son. So we need some pple to speak up for him
ReplyDeleteWhilst I do not condone armed robbery. If however he did not kill in the course of the robbery I reckon his death sentence should be substituted for long term imprisonment as a deterrent.
ReplyDeleteI would encourage his Barristers/Advocates to appeal the case and plead for leniency. Afterall the real unarmed or pen robbers do this to us all the time but still get away with it. Whilst poverty can not be an excuse for his misbehaviour it can be one of the reasons for the stiff penalty imposed.
