IS THIS A U-TURN?: I would rather do infrastructure, empower agriculture than pay N5,000 stipend - Buhari says

What you see above was The All Progressives Congress (APC) campaign billboard in 2015 revealing one of the many campaign promises promised by the APC/Buhari-led administration.

Since last year, Nigerian youths have been demanding a fulfillment of President Buhari’s election campaign promise of N5,000 monthly stipend for the unemployed.

In what appears to be a major U-turn from what his campaign promises before the 2015 presidential election, president Mohammadu Buhari has said he would not pay the N5000 stipend he promised to unemployed youth in the country.

The president made the remarks at the weekend while on the visit in Middle East.

He said it was wise to use a collation of the funds to put up infrastructures and empower them through agriculture for than to give out monies.

He said: “This largesse N5,000 for the unemployed, I have got a slightly different priority. I would rather do the infrastructure, the school and correct them and empower agriculture, mining so that every able bodied person can go and get work instead of giving 5,000, N5,000 to those who don’t work.”

It will be recalled that All Progressives Congress, APC had during its campaign supported the promise of paying N5,000 as monthly stipend to graduate job seekers and the most vulnerable in the country.

  1. This U-Turn is understandable considering the fact that most Nigerians never knew the true state of the economy under ousted PDP regime.I am sure if Jonathan made all Nigerians understand that the economy was in a comatose position earlier, through the pdp party blind and heartless corruption,no one would had promised such social benefits.Responsible and morally just Nigerians will understand this statement from President Buhari but don't expect all the wailing wailer's who supported PDP's looting to understand or keep quiet on this

    1. Brother, You do not sound like an intelligent person at all. I don't think you even have the least understanding of what you think you are saying. What you are telling us is that APC was clueless when they made those promises and Jonathan has to be blamed. Your comment does not appeal to common sense.

  12. Let us be practical and analytical about this N5,000.00. How many Nigeria youth are jobless? so, let us say 10million out of the population of 170million. N5,000.00*1,000,000=N5,000,000,000.00 (5Billion Naira) monthly right. Now what can N5,000.00 really buy in the market that will sustain anyone for one month? Nigeria people, let us be wise. I understand that they promised the N5,000.00 but the current situation on ground cannot afford throwing N5billion every month. The economic reality cannot afford it. Mr. President said he will concentrate on infrastructure and agriculture. I think he said it very well. If the 10million youth are provided land to farm with equipment, do you know we will stop importing food as we doing today? Let us stop politicizing everything. I am not in any party but I just want to make a common sense.

  13. He said it was his party that promised the money, not him. That he never promised N5000 in any campaign. What is the difference between him and his party? Voting for his party was voting for him. I have heard Lai Mohammed and Chris Ngige talked on this money this year. We are watching.

  14. I am sorry to say that, something is wrong in our country Nigeria. It's quite unfortunate that things are like this in the country. What's wrong in paying out such money if they can truly capture the names of qualified job seekers. They do it abroad and it's called social security. What this does is to alleviate the suffering of people and empower them in a way. Once they are able to get work, they take off their names from the list. This payment will remove some tension or potential tension from the land. Though I know it can be challenging to launch it because of the nature of Nigerians. President Obasanjo tried it a bit but was stopped because of the level of corruption. Well, may God help us through. But we need to be sincere to turn a new leave. No one is safe in Nigeria.

  15. Common sense indeed, pls iam a supporter of PMB I can forgive him bcos he want the best for naija but first thing first by the time he faces infrastructure, industry, and farming then there will be massive reduction on unemployment and then face youth with the payment of 5000 so he is still in order because the 4years has not finished

  16. In wish all of you who support PMB knows how long it takes to execute infrastructure project, you won't be supporting him. This infrastructure projects would not be completed within three or four years; pls try find out how long it takes for infrastructure projects to be completed in the most developed part of the world. We are talking about minimum of ten years time for an infrastructure project to be executed. Infrastructure projects are long term plan, and implementing them requires billions of dollars. For Nigeria to be infrastructurally developed and employ the teeming unemployed youth will take not less than 20yrs. So please lets not be deceived by vain promises. I am saying it is impossible to overcome unemployment with infrastructure development, the truth is that it takes a very long time.

I think PMB should proffer other solution that is short term; I mean the one he can execute in the remaining three years of his administration. MAY GOD HELP NIGERIA
