Court orders INEC to include PDP logo in Feb. 20 rerun poll in Langtang South

The Federal High Court in Jos on Tuesday ordered INEC to include the name and logo of PDP in the Feb. 20 rerun election in Langtang South State constituency.

The judge, Justice Dorcas Agishi, made the order on an ex parte motion filed by the Peoples Democratic Party. The PDP motion wants the court to restrain INEC from excluding it or its candidate from participating in the rerun by refusing to include the party’s name and logo on the ballot papers for the poll.

Agishi said the plea of INEC’s counsel that the commission was not in receipt of the motion was not sufficient to warrant further adjournment. She noted that the motion on notice in custody of the commission had all the facts that would enable INEC to file a defence before the court.

According to her, the reason of bureaucracy is weak while the action of INEC is deliberate and calculated to waste the time of the court. “Interim order sought by the PDP for Langtang South is hereby granted, the court hereby orders INEC to include the name and logo of the PDP for the election,’’ Agishi held. INEC had in statement announced the exclusion of the PDP and its candidate, Vincent Venman, from participating in the Feb. 20 rerun.

The statement signed by Osaretin Imahiyereobo, INEC Head, Voter Education, said the PDP and its candidate were excluded from the poll. “The PDP candidate for Langtang South, Vincent Bulus Venman, has been banned from contesting any election by the election petitions tribunal. “The decision was upheld by the Appeal Court on the account that Venman was an ex-convict,’’ the statement had stated.
