Court extends order against Kashamu’s arrest, detention

A Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday renewed an interim order which it granted on Monday restraining the arrest or detention of the Senator representing Ogun East Senatorial District in the National Assembly, Buruji Kashamu.

The restraining order with only 48 hours life span granted on Monday will now last till a fresh application by the Senator is heard and determined.

Ruling on an ex parte application by the senator on Monday, Justice Gabriel Kolawole granted an interim order, restraining the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Abubakar Malami, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and the agency’s former Chairman, Ahmadu Giade, from arresting or detaining him.

Justice Kolawole had on July 1, 2015, dismissed Federal Government’s application filed by the then Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Mohammed Adoke against Kashamu, seeking Kashamu’s extradition to the United States of America to face drugs-related charge.

Kashamu had filed a fresh ex parte application seeking a restraining order against a possible arrest or detention following his apprehension that he could be abducted by the Federal Government through the NDLEA despite the subsisting order of the court against his extradition.

He had filed along with the motion ex parte, an application seeking the committal of the AGF, NDLEA and Giade to prison for allegedly disobeying the court’s order of July 1, 2015.
