Buhari excited by Islamic bank’s offer to Nigeria

President Muhammadu Buhari on Thursday welcomed an offer by the Islamic Development Bank to organise a financing round-table in Abuja to mobilise more funds for investment and development of infrastructure in Nigeria.

According to a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, the President expressed his delight at the offer at a meeting he had with the IDB President, Dr. Ahmed Mohammed Ali, in Mecca, Saudi Arabia.

The President is currently on an official visit to Saudi Arabia.

Ali was said to have assured Buhari that the IDB will work with its traditional partners such as the Saudi Fund, the Kuwait Fund, Arab Bank for Development in Africa and the Abu Dhabi Fund, to increase the quantum of funding available to Nigeria.

Welcoming the offer, Buhari restated his government’s determination to revamp and diversify the Nigerian economy rapidly.

He said, “The days of Nigeria as a big oil producer with plenty of money are gone. We need all the support we can get to diversify our economy as quickly as possible.

“We also need to rehabilitate our infrastructure, develop the domestic capacity to feed ourselves and export the surplus.”

The President welcomed the plan by the IDB to fast track the take-off of the Bilingual Education Program, aimed at integrating the Almajiri system of education with Western education in Nigeria.

The IDB has already provided $98m for the Bilingual Education Program in Adamawa, Gombe, Kaduna, Kano, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Osun and Yobe.

The bank plans to support similar projects in other states of Nigeria.

  6. I woonder o...he is not islamizing Nigeria. The help he's seeking for from d IDB is good.reason is, it requires no payment of interest on d loan. Go to IMF or worldbank whether they will grnt u loan without interest charges. D interest charges alone will scare d life out of u. The IDB grant u N10 u pay back N10

  12. Because you all don't know the deal benind this arrangement. Am sorry for u all. This is one of the agender of this Government do inated by the Northeners. Gaddafi tried all these in the whole of Central Africa by supplying them with fun and the deal behind it was to propagate islam. Some of the fund was used to build mosques all around the remotest area in central AFRICAN COUNTRIES. In Chadfor example ypu will see a mosque built in the southern christian dominated areas. Some of you here are naive that you looks at the face benefits not consideing what is there for these people. My Manager once tells me that nothing comes for free in this world. If your boss likes you is because you kiss his ash sometimes. If Buhari is sincere and wants the goodwill of this country, he should seek for financial aid from the right source IMF or world bank. All these visit by Mr president is pointing to one direction and we beginning to see it. . The fall of this country is at site. God have mercy on us all.

  13. There is nothing bad with what the president is doing, former President Jonathan would have well "christianized nigeria". By sourcing for fund from great Britain, american instead they used this countries as a safe haven for looted funds.

  14. It's disturbing to note that Nigerians are so religious and partisan that it's blinds thier understanding.
It's okay for the president to seek funding from any bank or Islamic or not, but for what?? They intend to support infrastructural development, but the the question is WHAT INFRASTRUCTURE? Education.. WHAT KIND OF EDUCATION?? Almajiri system, a completely Islamic system of education to be incorporated in our educational system, a perfect strategy for Islamisation, an effective a approach for a sustainable Islamic indoctrination.

  15. Getting a loan from Islamic bank does not make Nigerian an Islamic country. Islamic bank offer loan with no interest and it will help Small scale business in Nigeria as our bank interest rate is so high.
Even Middle east bank interest is as low as 5% not like 21% that Nigeria banks charges.
It will be a huge benefits to Nigerian. l lived in Middle east precisely Qatar.
Let us put politics aside so that we can see opportunities
