Student in court for stealing wallet

A 27-year-old student, Luis Charles, on Monday appeared in a Grade 1 Area Court in Aso Pada, Nasarawa State, for allegedly stealing a wallet. The accused, who resides at Tudun Wada, Mararaba, was arraigned on a one-count charge of theft. Prosecutor Friday Adaji said the matter was reported at the `A’ Divisional Police Station by one Itoro Abraham of New Nyanya, Nasarawa State, on Jan. 10.
Adaji told the court that at about 5 p.m., while waiting for bus at Mararaba Junction, the accused put his hand in her bag and stole her wallet. The prosecutor said that the accused was caught and taken to the station. He said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Penal Code, which on conviction may attract three years imprisonment.
The accused pleaded not guilty to the charge, saying: “I was standing close to her when I heard her looking for her wallet but I did not steal the wallet.’’ The judge, Mr Albert Maga, granted him bail in the sum of N100, 000 with one surety in like sum. Maga said the surety must have a reputable character and must reside within the jurisdiction of the court. He adjourned further hearing till Jan. 21.
