President Buhari accused of 'humiliating Nigerian judges and suppressing the judiciary'

Human rights lawyer, Ebun-Olu Adegboruwa, has accused President Muhammadu Buhari of humiliating Nigerian judges and suppressing the judiciary.

Adegboruwa, who levelled this allegation on Wednesday, said it was time the Nigerian Bar Association directed all the lawyers in the country to stay away from the court until Buhari gave his commitment to uphold the rule of law.

The lawyer, citing the re-arrest last week of a former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, and Buhari’s comment on the case of the embattled Director of Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, accused the President of emboldening security agents to shun court orders.

He claimed that the Buhari government was laying the ground for a state of anarchy and expressed the fear that lawyers would be run out of business if the people finally lose confidence in the court.

He said, “If the President, during a Presidential media chat, can state clearly that he will not release a person granted bail by a court because he suspects that the person will jump bail because of the avalanche of evidence, then we should close down the courts. There is no need approaching the court any longer.

“The NBA should do more than a press conference; I call on the President of the NBA to rise up and confront the executive; we should fight for the judges; we shouldn’t allow the judges to be treated in such humiliating manner, whereby their orders have become useless to the executive.

“We, as lawyers, have that responsibility because the court is our workshop. If the courts are no longer functioning lawyers cannot earn money. And it is our duty to cry out. It is our responsibility to come to the aid of the judiciary, which has no voice, because we can’t hear judges, they can’t talk, the NBA is supposed to speak for them.

“So, I am calling on Mr. Alegeh, the President of the NBA, to step up the game; let’s declare a strike; let the lawyers boycott the court until there is manifest commitment from the executive to obey court orders.”

Adegboruwa also called on the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Mahmud Mohammed, to take control of what he termed conflicting judgments coming from the Court of Appeal in respect of the election petitions, especially in the case of Rivers State.

According to him, failure to get hold of the system, would also occasion loss of integrity, respect and confidence in the court and might take Nigeria back to the dark days of political assassinations.

He urged the CJN to use the appeals pending before the Supreme Court, in the cases of Rivers, Akwa Ibom and Taraba states, to correct the seeming confusion created by the decisions of the lower courts.

“By now, we should have a settled principle of law in relation to election petitions, as we have in land cases, in matrimonial cases, in chieftaincy cases, etc. We cannot be shifting judicial principles and precedents to suit the whims and caprices of politicians, or to accommodate political interests,” Adegboruwa said.

this is what happens when you foolishly elect an educated illiterate cow hand to head/run the business of governance...(a cook in an oil company should not be given the responsibility of drilling for crude oil, simply because the cook has been working in the oil company for thirty years)..what has "Dr" PMB learnt from his gallivanting with civilized world leaders and the sacred doctrine of the RULE Of LAW...
Ironically, THE VICE PRESIDENT IS A PROFESSOR OF LAW ....but he's on mute mode.. poor dude

  12. Its quite disheartening to note that lawyers like Ebun Olu Adegboriwa are part of the problems of this country. So because you want to earn a living at all cost, lives of fellow human beings mean nothing to you. These people- Dasuki et all committed so much atrocities simply because they were in power and have lives of innocent souls terminated abruptly, all because of greed. And lawyers like you see that as an avenue to get rich by sponsoring frivolous bail applications and adjournments to the detriment of quick dispensation of justice. What a shame! So you guys are not committed to any humane cause, you are only committed to your pockets! Shame on you Ebun and your likes!

  13. Is this country being regulated by shere emotions or by the provisions of the constitution? Much as it is good to preserve the lives and properties of the citizenry, equally, the sanctity of the rules of law must not be compromised.Buhari is fast becoming a Dictator, the "Change"is fast becoming a "Shame".But as events are unfolding, we are watching.

  17. Sometimes human rights are violated for nations to move forward. Witness the Rights of Man in France and the Magna Carta in England. Going by the heinous acts perpetrated by our politicians, there is need to do some clean up first before playing by the rules. It took Europe thousands of years to recognize citizen's rights. As for our lawyers et al, they put us in this miserable state. Appears they are now experiencing bad market. They thrive when the Nigerian politicians are having a field day. The days of fraudulent interlocutory injunctions are over.

  18. Let truth be told, if court grants an accused bail and the govt suspects the person is a flight risk, what is the job of the police and DSS? Our president is clearly showing us he is a dictator and pple that are suppose to have are drumming stupid support for his actions. This is democracy not military rule.

  19. Although the rule of law must be followed, I think a man who has abruptly sent innocent souls to untimely graves should be well dealt with. Let these thieves be given quick, but due judgement of life imprisonment.

  23. We all talk about rule of law. But we forgot to first champion law reform. What is our take on convicted thief that stole 50million and given option or bail for 5,000 Naira. ..

  24. The judiciary, lawyers and policemen are the catalyst that help corruption to thrive in this nation. Imagine the boy who stole Aregbesola's wristwatch was sentenced to live imprisonment while the man who stole billions of pension fund was just fined few thousand naira. Is this what the law is about? The so called human right lawyers were blind then! When the military setup kangaroo court and sentenced those military chaps who refused to be sacrificed/wasted for the pleasure of those involved in the arms fund scandal that is unfolding now, Where were the likes of the wicked and inhumane Onagoruwa then? Onagoruwa should be investigated too, may be this is an attempt for perverting judgement so that his name will not be mentioned like Methu.
Onagoruwa should burry his face in shame in the hollow of his palms. Those children that their parents were killed during the series of attack launched Boko Haram, how many of them has he adopted or even remember to send xmas gift to? How many of the IDPs did Sambo send relieve materials to, knowingly that he was the one who diverted the fund meant for fighting the insurgents to finance the re-election of GEJ. How many of Onagoruwa's children or family members are among the IDP's? If there is any, i bet it he will not be talking like this!

Onagoruwa should learn to talk like a reasonable and educated minds. He is calling for lawyers to boycott the court rooms so that the war against corruption will die untimely death. What he supposed to do is to challenge the government of the day in the court like late Gani used to do. By calling fellow lawyers to go on strike, he will scuttle the case against the accused and stalled or delayed many cases pending before the court.
Where things work, most of the lawyers and judges in Nigeria are to be jailed before the accused is jailed- let us remember the case of James Ibori and His lawyer in UK. Out of about 122 count charges against Ibori in Nigeria, the court declared him not guilty! Onagoruwa should now tell us what happened in UK!

When late Gani said that IBori was not qualified to contest for the post of a governor and dragged him to court, because he (Ibori) has served a jailed term in London then. Was it not the same court and lawyers that thwarted the case and said he has a clean bill?

When the judge was addressing him common thief who found his way to the seat of government, I wondered what our judges and lawyer will be thinking! You guy are the thieves.

Onagoruwa, what we need now is law reforms, judges should try to free themselves from the grip of our politicians and be professional, reject bribes

    1. My brother, his name is Adegboruwa. You made my day. The layers are the ones corrupting the judges. They take more than enough money from their clients to pervert the course of justice by buying judgement for them. Thsee rogues in alliance with most of the judiciary officers are the real enemies of the nation. They are old school mates and because the masses are gullible they encouraged the politicians to steal wrote petitions to their friends in EFCC. They will be arrested, the lawyers step in to buy them freedom in the name of bail.
Adegboruwa, a new sheriff is in town, no longer business as usual brother.

  25. I wonder if this Adegboruwa was living in another planet in the last dispensation. Even in America when they feel granting bail to a suspect will pose risk. Such bail is never granted. How can all suspect be granted bail in a sensitive case like this. Even PDP themselves confess to support the corrupting fight so why are you crying more than the suspect. Ok if a bail term of N1m is granted to a man that steal N800k, do you think that same will attempt to steal again? How can a judge grant a bail term of N250m to a man that steal N40b when the judge knows if will never see him in court again. Last time, lawyer accuse the executive of not having the political will to fight corruption, now someone is ready to do that only for lawyer and judges to become 'a cog in the wheel' in the fight against corruption.
