UN General Assembly: Nigeria, 151 others vote for prohibition, development/use of chemical weapons

Nigeria and 151 member countries of the UN General Assembly on Monday in New York voted `Yes’ for the prohibition, development, production, stockpiling/use of chemical weapons and their destruction.

The Democratic Peoples’ Republic of Korea, Iran and Syria, however, voted `no’.

On taking forward multilateral nuclear disarmament negotiations, Nigeria and 138 other countries, voted `yes’ while Czech Republic, Estonia, Hungary, Israel, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Russia, and United States, voted `no.’

On ethical imperatives for a nuclear-weapon-free world, Nigeria and 132 other countries, voted `yes’ while 36 countries, including the United States, United Kingdom voted against.

On follow-up to the nuclear disarmament obligations agreed to at the 1995, 2000 and 2010 Review Conference of the parties to the treaty on Non-Proliferation of Nuclear, Nigeria and 121 member states voted yes.

Forty eight countries voted against including the United States, Canada and Netherlands.

On the text for banning the production of missile material for nuclear weapon or other nuclear explosion devices, Nigeria and 179 countries supported the resolution with Pakistan voting against.

Far back as the early 1960s, Nigeria had been in the forefront of the opposition to nuclear proliferation, and took a principled stand on nuclear tests in Africa.

Nigeria’s early ratification of treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and the African Nuclear Weapon Free Zone Treaty is a testimony to that long-standing commitment to the building of a nuclear weapons-free world.

Nigeria is one of the 12 countries from the African region that has ratified the treaty.

This is consistent with her well-known policy towards nuclear disarmament, and attestation of its commitment to the treaty.
