No going back on social media censorship bill – Saraki

AS criticisms continue to trail the ongoing bill by the Senate to censor social media in the country, the Senate President, Bukola Saraki, has said no amount of attacks arising from it would make the Red Chamber abandon the proposed law.

Saraki, who acknowledged the roles of the social media in the development of the country’s growing democracy, however, said the Senate would not fold its hand to allowed it abused by some elements.

Speaking Thursday, when Senator Dino Melaye, APC, Kogi West, raised the issue under matters of urgent importance, during the day’s plenary, the Senate President berated activities of some social media platforms, which he said, had published numerous materials to undermine the integrity of the Red Chamber.

While flaying the criticisms that have greeted the proposed social media censorship bill, Saraki insisted that senators cannot be blackmailed to drop the bill.

Saraki, while acknowledging the excesses of some of the social media operators, however, acknowledged the existence of freedom of speech in the nation’s law book.

Even as he advised that the social media should be fair and accurate in their reportage, Saraki said the Senate cannot let `a few bad eggs’ taint the image of the social media.

“People must be held responsible for their action. I believe what has been raised is important,” Saraki said.

  3. Now you can see the type of senators we have. Is this law going to solve the pressing economic issues. There are already laws on slander and the likes. This is just a reenactment of decree 4. This is not really the change we deserve. I am really disappointed.

  4. Senate may not last for long as the Senate President..He's not effective and lack maturity as a leader...Has he forgotten that criticism brings out the better side of any govt... There are critical issues affecting the masses that have not been tackled, now you want to jail the same people that voted you in office for asking you to be upright in managing their affairs.....yeye chamber!!!!

  6. If these goats don't have skeletons in their cupboard, they won't be so desperate to pass a bill on social media which happens to be the least of our problems. Kindly pass a bill on corruption, death sentence. Bunch of thieves.

  8. He who lives in glass house must not throw stones. Saraki should know that his case is still pending at cct. If you stop people from expressing their opinions then where is the beauty of democracy? Be ready to build prisons instead of schools n creating more jobs for jobless Nigerians.

  9. This is anti democratic. That means if you tell the truth against the government you will be jailed. Nigerians have you seen the fake change you voted for. It would be better for anyone that feel that his image have being tarnished in the social media to go to court and ask for damages rather than pass a bill that is anti democracy. ANY FELLOW NAIJA WE HAVE LOST OUR DEMOCRACY
