Governor Obiano's reaction to Onitsha pro-Biafran protests

Governor Willie Obiano of Anambra State has finally reacted to the outcome of Wednesday’s protest by pro-Biafra groups, the Movement for the Actualization of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in Onitsha, the commercial city of the state, which reportedly led to the death of 9 civilians, two police sergeants and eight others injured.

The clash between protesters and security operatives on the Onitsha Head Bridge, also reportedly led to the burning down of the Onitsha Central Mosque and at least six Dangote trucks.

Bothered by this, Governor Obiano today, appealed to the various groups of agitators protesting for the release of the founder of Radio Biafra, Mr. Nnamdi Kanu, to maintain the peace in the state.

Obiano in a special address, said that he wouldn’t stand by and watch what had looked like a peaceful procession get out of hand.

“As your Governor and the Chief Security Officer of the state, I am compelled to act to avert any likely breakdown of law and order. In all situations, the preservation of human life comes first and I am determined to enforce that,” Governor Obiano declared.

He advised the members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Movement for Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB) and other aggrieved groups and individuals to “resist any attempt by hoodlums to take advantage of the situation and destabilize any part of Anambra State.”

The governor further warned all mischief makers who might want to take advantage of the peaceful demonstration to foment trouble to “keep off as we will not tolerate any breach of peace under any guise or pretence.”

He assured residents and visitors to the state that he was in touch with all the security agencies in the state and had their assurances that mischief makers would not be allowed to take advantage of the situation.

“I therefore wish to assure Ndi Anambra and all visitors to the state to go about their normal business peacefully as the security agencies are on top of the situation to preserve law and order,” he said.

  1. I expected you to tell us how what you described as a peaceful demonstration became bloody and why the armed forces started shooting at them.

    1. Let's get this straight, arm forces shoot becuz dey are daft , not professional enough and disgustingly, they don't care to preserve life. To them other life are worthless. This was the same thing they did to Zakzaki in Zaria by killing two of his children leading a peaceful protest. What was done abt it? Guess noting. And that's why such scenario may keep reoccurring since they get away with it easily

  5. Mr. Governor your broadcast does not message peace in the land its glaring you are not being sincere. I can see that you are encouraging what is ongoing. With your experience at this level of governance, most rally termed peaceful always degenerate to violence. In the first place why should they start what they cannot predict the end result? Let call spade a spade with the word Biafra (Biafra (IPOB) & Movement for Actualization of Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), this nature of rally will definitely go violence it is better you call your people to order or otherwise more causality will be experience. ‘’A lost life can never witness the success of a proposed cause’’ Please take a leave from Northern Boko Haram, it all started like a Childs play, look at it today. Government is still trying to curtail them, six years counting they are not there yet. Can you immerging how many lives that has been lost so far or the IDP situation. However if you are ready for what happened during Biafra war of 60s then continue to watch situation going bad otherwise Igbo leaders should make hay while the sun shines.

  6. Governor Obiano should know that these people he killed through his enemy friends called the Task Force, are the same people you went to beg for their vote, what you use to pay them is death, their BLOOD will cry before God against you and your GENERATIONS UNBORN for ever. These are armless protesters, why using LIVE ammunition, where are the HOT WATER Amoured Tanks, Tear Gas and Smoke Cannisters, that are harmless but effective, please as the chief security officer of the state try to emulate what is done in civilised world.

  10. I am blaming the president. All this killing will be on his head. ICC will come in soon. During protest like this the only thing allowed by law is to teargas the crowd. Instead they were ordered to kill. People have the right to protest regardless Wether the protest see tomorrow's light. To the protesters, they consider the arrest and detention their leader as illegal. That's their position. And we should respect that. When we agree that we can disagree, our problems will be few. This protest is not pocket size. All the states in South east/south are involved. Is this something Mr president should throw a blind eye? He ought to reach out to the agreived party and talk or dialogue. We have protest in some states by trade unions who walk in their hundreds to state govs houses. The govs come out, or his deputy and address the crowed. And a meeting is fixed for dialogue. Buhari has not displayed he is the father of the nation. "I belong to nobody. I belong to everybody " he once said.
