FG to probe N270 Billion expended on East-West road project

The Federal Government is to probe the 362 kilometre East West Road project to determine if the N270 billion so far expended on it was commensurate with the work done.

Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Pastor Uguru Usani, who disclosed this, weekend, during an inspection of the Rivers/Akwa Ibom states section of the road project, said his ministry would engage auditors to look at the books to ensure that contractors were guided by specifications and designs for the job.

Fielding questions from newsmen during the inspection, Pastor Usani, flanked by his Minister of State, Professor Claudius Daromola and some top officials of the Ministry of Niger Delta, said the Federal Government was in a hurry to see that the project was completed.

He said that the intervention by Rivers State Government and some stakeholders on the portion of the road between Onne and Eleme Local Governments of Rivers State was for the good of the country.

The minister said that the N3 billion which the state government and other stakeholders saved the Federal Government with the intervention job on the road would be deployed to other needs.

It will be recalled that Governor Nyesom Wike rallied some companies, among them Intels, Indorama and a few others, to collaborate with the state government to fix 6 kilometres of the road between Eleme and Onne at a cost of N3 billion.

The minister said: “The intervention is for the good of the country. We are told by the contractors that the state government will work with other companies to raise the balance. The contractors have said that the part of the road was part of the contractual agreement. The savings made from the intervention will be applied elsewhere.”

  1. Enough of the bells and whistles about several probes. The federal government should concentrate on probing a few cases, and prosecuting those found guilty. After which, they can begin to probe new cases. For months now, all we've been hearing is probe this, probe that, without anyone being sent to jail! Now, we no longer hear of the foner minister of petroleum - allison madueke. Very soon, dasuki's case would be swept under the carpet too. Already, senate president saraki's case is already fading away. The government should send some persons to jail and stop making continuous noise about probe.
