Buhari leaves for South Africa today

President Muhammadu Buhari will leave Abuja for South Africa today to participate in the Forum on China/Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in Johannesburg where he will ask China’s President Xi Jinping to fund rail and power projects urgently needed to diversify an economy hit hard by a plunge in oil prices.

The meeting would be a continuation of his interaction with Jinping which began in New York during the last General Assembly of the United Nations, UN.

The President would be accompanied by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Geoffrey Onyema; Minister of Transportation, Chubuike Amaechi; and the Minister of Industry, Trade and Investment, Okechukwu Enelamah to the forum which would commence on December 4 and end on December 5.

A statement by the presidential spokesman, Mr. Femi Adesina, stated that during the meeting in New York, President Buhari had indicated to Xi Jinping that “he wanted China to re-commence stalled rail projects under new terms that would see China providing nearly all the financing required.”

The statement added that “of particular interest is the coastal railway project stretching for 1402 kilometres linking Lagos in the West with Calabar in the East; a project that is expected to be financed with 12 billion U.S Dollars Chinese loan and which will create about 200,000 jobs.”

Another rail project that will be up for renegotiation is the $8.3bn Lagos-Kano standard gauge modernization project, of which only a segment, Kaduna-Abuja has reached completion stage.

Outside from railways, President Buhari is also expected to discuss ways of kick-starting the 3,050 MW Mambila Power Station, considered to be a strategic project initiated in 1982 but has not taken off.

Adesina revealed that the Chinese President expressed the willingness of his country to finance the whole project through a special loan agreement.

The president is expected back to Nigeria on December 5.

You did not bother to read the reason for the travel and what he is going there to achieve. 2. Ever heard of something called representatives, @ohiozei obaseki there will always be meetings that appear important he has to prioritise, he has a VP does he not and a minister of works. Lack of trust and not trusting his team is what will cause his failure mark my words, not the he does not have good intentions he does but he also need people to execute the duties

    3. Ayuk, this is a follow-up meeting to their previous discussion in New York. In addition, this interaction is between President to President not President to Minister, therefore, you cannot blaim Buhari for attending the forum....You guys should always read between the line before jumping to conclusion.....

    2. When you need a loan, do you "just" call the banker up to arrange the loan? Or when you need an urgent leave of absence or a salary advance, do you "just" call your employer up? Or when you need a job, do you "just" call the company up to resume the next day?
      Na wa for Nigerians o!!!

    3. Hhm! had it been pmb has not been traveling abroad for official assignments, they will say he is sick and too old to lead the country. Now that he is active enough making all sort of relevant connections for the progress of the nation, they say "he is busy wasting resources and doing nothing". Well, my believe is "trained, certified and sponsored wailers" will never succeed in failing Mr. president in carrying out the legitimate responsibilities reposed on him by the teaming and well meaning Nigerians.
More grease to your elbows Mr. president, we will ever remain with you in taking the country to a greater height.

  9. Ohioze obaseki, if u are not stupid, u would have asked ur self how many times successful country presidents who were once in our situation traveled arround the world crying for help that is in our doir step. Nigeria is a rich country, people like dupkesi, denzieni and co pulling us back. These money can be used to catalyse tangible projects with these same people the president is travelling to beg for funding. I'm talking from experience, gulf countries in middle east develops like this as I'm a living witness and part of the development in aforementioned country. So don't talk blindly. Go and insult the senior people in ur family if u don't know what to say on this platform.

Well! I am of the believe that "The only place where success comes before work is in dictionary" PMB's visitations to other countries is a positive work aim at attracting success for the country. Thus, wailing from certified wailers will never intimidate pmb from carrying out the legitimate & constitutional role reposed on him by the good citizens of our dear country Nigeria. More grease to your elbows Baba, our sincere hope will continue to remain with you for ever!!
