The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission has finally released the new power tariff regime, in which it outlined the various rates of increase in energy charges for consumers across the country.
It also announced the removal fixed electricity charges for all classes of electricity consumers and noted that power users would only pay for what they consume.
About two weeks ago, the Minister of Power, Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, revealed that electricity tariffs would increase and urged consumers to comply with respect to paying their bills, as he promised that the sector would record considerable improvement thereafter.
Confirming the tariffs increase on Monday, NERC stated that henceforth, from the next billing period, power distribution companies would no longer charge their customers monthly fixed charges.
Fixed charge is that component of the tariff that commits electricity consumers to paying an approved amount of money not minding whether electricity is consumed during the billing period.
Outlining the rates of increase in tariffs for various customer classes in selected locations across the country, NERC said, “For instance, residential customer classification (R2) in Abuja Electricity Distribution Company will no longer pay N702 fixed charge every month. Their energy charge will increase by N9.60.
“Also, residential customers (R2 customers) in Eko and Ikeja electricity distribution areas will no longer pay N750 fixed charges. They will be getting N10 and N8 increase respectively in their energy charges. Similarly, the burden of N800 and N750 fixed charges would be lifted off the shoulders of Kaduna and Benin electricity consumers. These consumers will see an increase of N11.05 and N9.26 respectively in their energy charges.”
This comes less than a week after the House of Representatives asked NERC to stop plans to increase electricity tarrifs. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

And you anonymous 7.40 am, must you use abusive words? What did he/she say to warrant being called a fool, you can still put your opinion across without being rude and abusive. DeleteGive us constant power not increase with epileptic power supplies. Tell Ambode to get power from same source where Ghana got theirs and banish black out in Lagos. We are tired of carrying jerry cans and pollution in Lagos State
ReplyDeleteGood job Sir, Mr President is working
ReplyDeleteBy the time you multiply the current rate in naira by the energy consumed, and compare it to what it used to be( including the formal fixed charged), then you will conclude if the Minister has done you a favour or disfavour. And until then, as events are unfolding, we are watching.
ReplyDeleteTunde Fashola you have not disappointed us. Keep it up
ReplyDeletemost comenters here ar just mumy boy. who dont kn what it takes to pay bill.so let me not join isue with u pple. but as event is folding we see
ReplyDeleteAbusive words again, true show of your parentage and character.
DeleteMr vision family foundation, check yours too...you are not as educated as u feel you are....
DeleteSo people are so gullible ooh. How can any reasonable person be thanking him for indirectly increasing our hardship again. How much is the fixed charge compared to the increase in billings on what is consumed? Just do the maths and then you will understand you will be paying more than you used to. More over, make them make the prepaid metre available to everyone first if they are sincere. I don't have a problem sha if it comes with steady power supply. My people need to make critical analysis of things before them open mouth to talk.
ReplyDeleteMugu u .even if it is free u will still complain RAM
DeleteThe increase is not an issue. Let all crave for constant supply to enjoy the value of what we pay. Govt policy is never mean to met hardship on it populace except there is no palliative measure
DeleteVision satanic foundation, i am truly sorry for you. Your heart is filled with evil and hatred. I hope you are not a bomb carrying member of boko haram.
DeleteY is this fool just attacking everybody....
DeleteYou can't enjoy what you didn't pay for. One thing with Nigerians, they don't like paying their taxes. Without paying for public utilities, how do you enjoy them? As far as I am concerned, the tarrifs increase is modest. Let us put our act together and move ourselves forward. It Federal Govt can't make a difference without the public support. Pay your taxes.........
ReplyDeleteI think this is a good bargain as people will no longer pay these rogues without consuming power. You pay for what you use. Albeit, there may be an increase in price of per KWH but this will force the rogues operating our power sector to ensure there is power to consume.
ReplyDeleteWhy the increase in tariff, and no increase in the supply first?
ReplyDeleteBefore u increase d Tariff, give all Nigerian prepaid meter first.Don't put the cart before the horse.
ReplyDeleteAPSeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Changi Changi ! When is the toll gate and subsidy removal coming into effect Sir? APseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee! Changi Changi ko! Changi Ni! Sai Baba!
ReplyDeleteBala i like your humour. But you are so on point.
DeleteThe problem is not the increase totally, the problem is estimated billing. that is what people should be worried about, all the customers that are currently billed on estimation are the ones i pity. If you have a meter and a functional one, atleast you can regulate your consumption and be sure you are paying for what you consumed, but in a situation you are not metered how are you sure whose consumption you are paying for? So any outcry against the tariff increase should be about estimated billing. Na una go hear nwiiiiii!!! Pele, Ndo, Sorry in advance.
DeleteINCREMENT IN TARIFF IS OK IF ONLY THERE WILL BE EQUAL SUPPLY OF POWER TO THE END USERS [CONSUMERS]. WITH A BUOYANT ECONOMY BEING ANTICIPATED UNDER THIS ADMINISTRATION BEGINNING FROM NEXT YEAR'S BUDGET TO BE PRESENTED BY THE PRESIDENT ABOUT NOW AT THE NATIONAL ASSEMBLY, CHANGE FROM THE STATUS QUO IS BETTER IF ONLY IT BENEFITS THE COMMON MAN. GOD HAS BLESSED NIGERIA!
ReplyDeleteFashola, U should have convened Urself with improved POWER SUPPLY not INCREMENT in electricity TARRIF. Multiply 11 by consumption of about 400 then add this to the original bill,
ReplyDeleteI tire for this MUMU naija POLITICIANS O!
Abolition of fixed charges had often been announced in the past with no effect. Going by the fraudulent practices in the past I will not be surprised to find that areas not covered by these new tariffs will continue to to be billed for 'meter servicing',even with prepaid meters. Until the removal of hidden billings are totally made universal it is difficult to believe those concerned with the supply of electricity in the country.
ReplyDeleteWhat the wonderful government is offering is 35-40% tariff hike. If this does not translate to constant power availability, it is a rip off. Expect more hike in twelve months
ReplyDeleteIt is easier said than done. Pls can the minister give some hotline for complaints if the fixed charges are still reflected on our bills. And can the minister tell when specifically are we expected to stop seeing fixed charges on our bills? Because if there is no set time, we might still be robbed of it and all we will hear from the power suppliers is that the policy hasn't been implemented. So it will be ideal if we are told when this will be effective so we be on the watch.
ReplyDeleteWe just want to believe that this increment will not be to our disadvantage.
