The Senate on Wednesday rejected a motion for the payment of N5, 000 monthly allowance to unemployed youths in the country.
The motion was sponsored by Philip Aduda (PDP, FCT) but was greeted with shouts of “no, no” when he tried to explain it.
Attempts by the Minority Leader, Godswill Akpabio, to second the motion were disrupted by the rowdiness.
Intervening, President of the Senate, Bukola Saraki, posed the question but the senators responded along party lines.
While Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members yelled ‘’aye’’ in favour of the motion, All Progressives Congress (APC) senators, who were in majority, rejected it.
However, a motion calling for the probe of the utilisation of Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) funds by the immediate past administration was adopted by the senators.
The sponsor of the motion, Babajide Omoworare, prayed that every naira spent by the past government on SURE-P and other poverty alleviation programmes should be accounted for.
When the president of the Senate put the question, it was supported with a loud “aye” from the APC wing of the chamber, with no dissenting voice from the PDP side.
In his remarks, Mr. Saraki urged the senators to take the issue of unemployment very seriously and not play politics with it.
“We should stay above party line on this issue that is so important. We have seen growth in the last years but this has not translated to employment.
“Government alone cannot do it; the private sector has a role to play and the enabling environment must be created,” he said.
PDP leaders have lately called on President Muhammadu Buhari and the ruling APC to fulfill their campaign promise of paying N5, 000 to unemployed Nigerian youth.
The motion on Wednesday is believed to have been part of that call. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

APC propaganda... a party built on lies and deceit together with corrupt bureaucrats...
ReplyDeleteAll the supporters of apc will not condemn the stand of apc senators on this issue. But they will be the first to support the confirmation of amaechi whose case of corruption is still pending in court. Ye ye people.
ReplyDeleteFor your information, Amaechi has not been charged by any court or anyone. He (Amaechi) has only filled summoned the Rivers govt to court for corruption allegation. Get your facts right 👉!!
DeleteMR FRED, You are wrong
DeleteEveryone in that house don't have the mind of the unemployed youth in their heart, all they know is there family.......God help this Nation
ReplyDeleteThe idea is laudable but Nigeria lacks the technology and system to effect this benefit system. The country would need to have in place a sound Biometric database of youths right from birth to when they becomes unemployed
DeleteSo why promise?
DeleteYes time for politiicking as come . APC made the promised If PDD sponsored it , it then becomes political hijacking . And it will become part of campaign for 2019 that "We pdp sponsored the motion . PMB made the promise and @ appropriate time APC member will sponsore it and that will be the end of it . So that APC will then say we made the promise and we furfilled it . Thrust us again in 2019
ReplyDeletel do not support it also because the money will not get to the jobless youth rather people will embezzle the money as usual.
ReplyDeleteNigeria has not develop to that level because we lack database.
But the money can be diversify into creating job opportunity in terms of loan with no interest. This will bring out the youth creativity, increase self employment and creating more jobs.
Yes o. Good comment agree wit u
DeleteI agree with you Da. However campaign promise not fulfilled is equivalent to GEJ promising good power and failed to deliver
DeleteDid APC not do their homework before making these promises? What about an exchange rate of $1 to N1? They have lied to Nigerians and Nigerians are gullible.
Deletekwakwakwakwa.......change noni. Still waiting for APC change? text slow and scammers to 419!
ReplyDeleteYou can see how these lying faggots of APC are naive and callous that unemployment of youth has turned in party line politiking. Outcasts!
ReplyDeleteIs it not part of the campaign promises? So let them pay it. No excuses.
ReplyDeleteWe may try in our best to deceive foreign nations and pose a false picture, the truth remains that over 85% of Nigerians live below the threshold of poverty. The senate may politicize the issue of #5000 monthly benefit for unemployed youths, but it's not the best for the country and citizens living in abject poverty. I have never known the Nigerian senate in any charitable organisation, and Nigerians are not good in that regard. Its only in this country that people play lords over the poor and perpetually enslave people. This is injustice in the sight of man. Pls can the senate give a concise reason will the plea was turned down? I speak as a youth, since the senate could be this dishearted we will not compromise our mandates in forthcoming elections. It should be known that caring for the unemployed is the best way to reduce crime rate in a society. Nigerians are not naturally bad as been painted, but rather its the system, such as the show of the senate that turn kindhearted people to be monsters. APC campaigns for change, but one thing Nigerians forget to ask in haste was whether "change for better or worse". I believe APC meant the best for us. However, the display of shame by the APC senates in the recent past paints contrary picture. LONG LIVE NIGERIA!!!
ReplyDeleteAll these people need be eliminated, if not, our lives as youth will pass by with suffer, sorrow, & pain till old, & we don't pray our kids start same cycle over their life too.
ReplyDeleteAPC lied during the campaign, just to get our votes! I'm personally insulted. I'm not a fool and they should not paint Nigerians as fools!!
