Pro-Biafra protesters storm Owerri

Hundreds of supporters of Pro- Biafra groups on Thursday marched along major streets in Owerri and called for the release of Mr Nnamdi Kanu, the acclaimed operator Radio Biafra.

The demonstrators, comprising members of Movement for the Sovereign State of Biafra and the Indigenous People of Biafra, chanted pro-Biafra songs and war songs.

While the demonstration lasted, armed security operatives, including the police and the army, in trucks, monitored the situation.

A demonstrator, who refused to be named, said that the agitation was meant for the Federal Government to release Kanu unconditionally and allow Biafra people freedom.

He said that it was wrong for the Federal Government and its security agents to arrest Kanu because he supported and believed in the freedom of Biafra people.

“Kanu did not commit any crime to be arrested by the Nigerian Government and we cannot hold ourselves back in asking for his release even if we die in the process,’’ the demonstrator said.

He said that the members of the group had carried out the demonstration in Enugu, Aba, and Port Harcourt.

“We are in Owerri today and hope to extend this move to other towns within Biafra territory till we achieve our aim,’’ he said.

The demonstrators wore T-Shirts with Biafra inscriptions and flags.

The three markets in Owerri — Owerri Main Market, New Market and Owerri Relief Market — were shut while some private schools and shop owners closed their businesses to avoid any ugly experiences.

When contacted on why armed policemen were accompanying agitators, the Police Public Relations Officer, Mr Andrew Enwerem, declined comment.

“Please I do not have any comment on that my brother,” Enwerem said.

  2. This are the same reasons why other regions cannot trust Igbos to produce a president. They have constantly shown their rebellious and cessationist tendencies.

    1. The Igbos are not interested in your presidency any more. The Igbos don't want to remain in Nigeria any more. We don't want to be with you, why are you people forcing us. The Lord Lugard's mistake is not working any longer, can't you see it.Pharaoh let my people go, else you will perish in the RED SEA.

  3. Peace my people, if it's the will of God for us to be together let's it be. But if not Gd should peacefully divide us.

  4. Turakin or whatever you call yourself, first correct your spelling 'CESSATIONIST' it is SECESSIONIST. Now please sincerely answer me this question. What makes it a crime for any group people to seek self determination? Prior to amalgamation in 1904 by Sir Lord LUGARD was any of the constituent parts of present day Nigeria consulted for their assent in the arrangement? If the present arrangement favors you and you are comfortable others that are not comfortable should not be seen as criminals for demanding to have what can not be alienated from them i.e RIGHT TO SELF DETERMINATION as enshrined in the UN charter for human rights. The right thing to do now is for the Nigeria government to put this yearning and aspirations of these people to TEST through REFERENDUM and not resort to suppression, highhandedness or use of violence.See what is happening in Syria as a result of turning deaf ears to sincere calls for freedom. Let us be HUMANIST in our approach to issues that touch life and existence. Thank you.
