Pro-Biafra protest hits Rivers state

The ongoing Pro-Biafra protest against the arrest of Director of London-based Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, by the Federal Government on Tuesday, spread to Rivers, paralysing socio-economic activities in Port Harcourt.

Confirming this to newsmen in Port Harcourt, Spokesman of the Police Command in the state, Mr Ahmad Muhammad, said that the protesters came into the state from Aba on Monday night.

According to him, they spent the night at Oyigbo and commenced the protest from there before moving into Port Harcourt.

The Biafra movement demonstration began early last week in parts of the South-East and spread to Asaba, Delta, on Friday, where no fewer than 20 of the demonstrators were arrested by the police.
In Rivers, the protesters, some riding on motorcycles and flying Biafra flags, marched through Aba Road into Port Harcourt city but where intercepted by the police with a barricade between Rumukrushi and 1st Artillery junction.

At that point, the scene became rowdy and the police used teargas in effort to disperse the protesters. In the stampede that ensued, some of the protesters fell down as they scampered for the safety.
But, some of them, who later converged on a spot in the area, claimed that the people that fell down were shot with live ammunition by the police. One of the protesters, Samuel Elijah, 25, explained that the reason for the demonstration was to make the Federal Government to release Kanu.

Some residents of Aba Road, who were forced to shut their homes and businesses, decried the development, saying it was ill-timed and unnecessary. They also said that the protesters ought to have complied with the procedure for protests to avoid clash with security agents.

On the alleged use of live ammunition on the protesters, the police spokesman declined comment and did not also confirm if arrests had been made.

  3. Who is talking about war? Must there be war be these people arw allowed to go there own way? If they feel they are maginalized, they should be allowed to go. The North used Boko Haram to intimidate Jonathan and now they have what they want. We Yorubas should be thinking if we actually belong to this Nigeria project. The Country seems to be tilting towards secession with the type of government Buhari is forming

  8. Nations have separate without war. The unity of any nation is not cast on gold. There will always be alignment and disalignment. If Igbos decide to leave the federation, put their demand to referendum. It's very clear the federation as it's now do not favour them. In the alternative the government can visit the 2014 conference recommendations

  11. The Igbo's has not been given prominence in the Nigerian project does not make anyone the cause but themselves and they know it........ It would even be a disaster to ask them to bring out a presidential candidate, because heads would roll.... I am so happy with this their protest organization for the first time I can see unity, may be it is because the youths are in the forefront of this protest... the Igbo's need to know that if they put their house in order they don't need a protest to get what they want in the Nigeria project...... they started the protest in Anambra then Asaba Delta State, it would be recalled that same IGBO'S when Ibe Kachikwu was made NNPC new GMD they said he was not an Igbo man, and they need real Igbo man of their own. You need to believe in yourselves and put your house in order or else you would always be seen as supporters club.... I like your present spirit it is so good, keep it up

    1. i pity u, ibos with their selfish nature can not govern themselves. biafra if given freedom can not stand the test of time come most of them are too selfish. their ideology is me, myself and myself. this has been proven in many ways. good-luck to u guys

    2. You are still puting that your divide and rule strategy. Igbos did not say tha kachikwu does not belong to them, but in Nigeria where we have six geopolitical zones, appointment must be made from all the zones to give everybody sense of belonging, but in all the presidential appointment, non, even a single person is from south east. Does it not show that the president does not want the zone? Even if they did not vote for him, he should have put the country first and forget his personal grudges to make peace reign as a father. During Jonathan's era, the north east and north west did not vote for him but as a peace lover, he appointed many people from those zones. So this is the reason behind the sudden emergence of Biafran agitation. If you can remember, the ohaneze told the president that if igbos are more marginalized, they will secede. Let's call a spade a spade so that the country will be good. Let us stop sycophancy

  12. Biafra protest could not hold on popular oilmill market today in Port Harcourt.
I trust Igbos with business, they are in the market today selling like Nigerians. I can assure you that before December 01, all these noise is over. Do you know how many Igbos live in Nigerian territory doing businesses? How will they survive in Biafra? selling what to who?
