The Niger Delta Presidential Amnesty Office has dismissed claims by some Student Delegates of the programme studying at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Port Elizabeth in South Africa that they were being owed four months arrears of allowances.
The Coordinator of the Programme, Brigadier General Paul Boroh (rtd), who debunked the claim, described such allegation as unfounded stating that the Amnesty Office had paid the In-Training allowances for the students to the month of August.
He confirmed that the Office had since processed the papers for payment for the months of September and October, which would hopefully come through in a few weeks.
General Boroh also indicated that he has given a clear directive for the accommodation allowances of these Students to be processed for payment to cover the remaining months of 2015.
He expressed sadness over the protest while explaining that some recent fiscal policies of government require that proper verification are done before funds requested by such offices as the Presidential Amnesty Office are released by the Central Bank of Nigeria, which he noted created the seeming delay in accessing allocated funds and subsequently in effecting disbursement.
He however, affirmed the readiness of the Amnesty Office to ensure consistency in the payment of all allowances that delegates under the programme are entitled to.
General Boroh also assured the students that the Amnesty Office will look into all issues regarding their stay in South Africa including the matter of expired visas and visa renewals as well as the frozen accounts of some delegates by South African banks.
