Fuel scarcity hits Akure

Fuel scarcity yesterday grounded commercial and vehicular movement across Akure, the Ondo state capital.

Few filling stations that dispensed the product sold it for N100 per litre.

Many of the stations were under lock and key as dealers reportedly hoarded the product.

Consequently, long queues were found at the few stations that dispensed the product.

Reports from other towns across the state indicated that the scarcity had rstarted in the areas.

It was learnt that many of the filling stations in the state had the products but some marketers deliberately hoarded the products to make huge profit and as a result causing the artificial scarcity.

Some petrol attendants spoken with said that they had the product in their pumps but that they were instructed to stop selling until further notice.

One Biyi Adedejii said the dealers were informed that the price of the products would soon be reduced by the Federal government hence the confusion.

He said: “I have been ordered by my boss not to sell the product, but he is in the best position to give the reason for his directive. I don’t know. But we shall be selling as soon as he gives us orders.”

Contacted, the Chairman of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria in Ondo, Ekiti and Osun state, Mr Bayo Olowookere attributed the development to the unavailability of the product in Ore, Ondo State depot.

Olowookere said: “It is not only in Ondo that we have the problem, it is a general problem. I think the problem is from Ore Depot, if we are able to get the product from Ore, we would not have had this type of problem.
