A former Governor of Bayelsa State, Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, has died of hypertension.
Former State Commissioner for Youth and Sports Development, Ebitimi Agary, confirmed this to our correspondent on Saturday.
Alamieyeseigha, 63, was said to have died at University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, where we was receiving medical attention.
Chief Press Secretary to Bayelsa Governor, Mr Daniel Iworiso-Markson, confirmed the development in a telephone interview.
Alamieyeseigha, who died around 4pm, was earlier rushed to the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital from his residence in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, on Thursday.
NigerianEye gathered that the governor stayed briefly in Yenagoa last week before he went to Port Harcourt where his health condition worsened.
It was learnt that the ex-governor later slipped into a coma and had been on life support for two days until his death on Saturday.
His remains, according to a source at the UPTH, were later moved to the mortuary in the hospital.
The source said, “He was down ‘somehow’ for the past few days. He was in Yenagoa and from Yenagoa to his Port Harcourt house. It was from his Port Harcourt house that they moved him to UPTH.
“He was moved to UPTH from his house in Port Harcourt on Wednesday. He died this afternoon around 4pm. They said his death was as a result of cardiac arrest.”
When contacted, the Chief Medical Director, Professor Aaron Ojule, declined to speak on the matter and referred our correspondent to the family of the former governor.
Another source at the Port Harcourt International Airport revealed that one of the sons of the ex-governor known to be a very cheerful person was moody when he was seen at the airport on Saturday.
“He has been a very cheerful person. But today, he appeared very moody. We never knew the reason for this until we heard that his father just died,” the source said.
Often referred to as the ‘Governor-General of the Ijaw Nation,’ Alameiyeseigha had a turbulent political past when he was the governor of Bayelsa State.
He was once accused of corruption and allegedly disguised as a woman in London in order to evade arrest over charges of money laundering and was later impeached as a governor.
Alamieyeseigha was a die-hard supporter of former President Goodluck Jonathan and the incumbent Governor of Bayelsa State, Seriake Dickson.
The United Kingdom had in 2013 requested for his extradition to the country to face trial but Jonathan, did not grant the request. The administration then granted him presidential pardon.
The British government, again, sought the support of the President Muhammadu Buhari-led Federal Government to extradite Alamieyeseigha to London for trial on alleged money laundering.
He was the governor of Bayelsa State from 1999 to 2005.
Alamieyeseigha, died a month to his 63rd birthday. Pardoned by the administration of ex-President Goodluck Jonathan for his conviction on corrupt practices as Governor of Bayelsa, he was recently thrown into a panic state by the request of the British government for his extradition.
The request by the government of United Kingdom has however been a subject of criticism as Ijaw groups and political leaders had described it as suspicious and a political vendetta by the President Buhari Administration.
Alamieyeseigha had in recent times also been a strong advocate of the second term aspiration of the incumbent Governor of the state, Seriake Dickson.
In his last outing as one of the political leaders of the Peoples Democratic Party in the state, Alamieyeseigha had been clamouring for the people to vote for the PDP.
He had perceived that the upcoming onslaught of the All Progressives Congress in the state during the forthcoming December 5 governorship poll would not work as the state is solely for the PDP.
The news of the demise of Alamieyeseigha, who until his death was regarded as one of the greatest leaders the state had ever had, hit the residents like a thunderstorm.
In every nook and crany of the state, particularly in Yenagoa, residents, especially of the Ijaw stock, were seen discussing the death in hush tones.
The United Kingdom government, which arrested the former governor on allegation of money laundering in September 2005 during the government of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, recently requested for the extradition of Alamieyeseigha to face the charges for the alleged crime in the UK.
He had earlier been impeached, arrested, tried and convicted and sent to jail in Nigeria for two years in 2007 for fraud after he fled the UK, disguising as a woman to evade trial in December, 2005. Click to signup for FREE news updates, latest information and hottest gists everyday

DeleteIdiot....show some decorum....no matter wat,it's not right to rejoice over d demise of someone....
DeleteJesus would not approve of using His name in cursing someone. He came to bless not to curse. He came to save not to condemn (Lk 6: 28 & 23: 34).
DeleteA good name is indeed better than riches.
ReplyDeleteTrue talk
Deletethis man is not death, so many island in the Creek's he must have been taken out there to live his last so to avoid prison in the UK, his death cannot be so coincidental to his repatriation request.... they should prove it....Chai! Chai!! Chai!!! Dearizz god dooooo!!!!!!!

Hahahaha Alayagbagba don commit suicide. He dey fear to go to prison in UK. Oleeee, the next person is Jonathan. They are all thieves and they will surely pay for their crimes.
ReplyDeleteAh Ah! He has been tried and convicted in Nigeria, he cannot be tried again in the UK for the same offence, unless his trial is for jumping bail.
DeleteIf he didn't stea launder the proceeds from his stealing as governor from his state perhaps he could have sought medical help from overseas. He couldn't since he was jumped bail. Then again if ye had governed well perhaps he'd have built a hospital worthy of handling such cases as his. He didn't do it his successor who later became president of the nation didn't do it. Two later successions didn't either. So I guess many more faced with his situation would die again and again.
ReplyDeleteYou read my mind.
DeleteCrying wolf? Hmm. . . . . for a man who gained the unsavory reputation of disguising like a woman to beat security out of UK, this news is questionable. The British High Commissioner should be dispatched to confirm his death.
ReplyDeleteY not go n confirm it urself...
DeleteIt is si alarming that eminent personnel whose in their low intelligent quotient still have it in mind that they do no whereas they no next to nothing in the habit of making nonsense comments in social media for fun,it is just a pity that same cup will be used to measure u too.instead of paying last respect to the dead you are still making allegation on the dead and one anonymous still saying all above 50yrs should die even Jonathan to die, why?just for making comments rite?has anyone of you forgotten that Jesus Christ died of false allegations?they everybody believed he committed all dose offences and even his most trusted servant denied him,so he gave up d ghost.Obasanjo who plotted his arrest is still romancing PMB as not to open his book but ko one is asking for his head, all filed governors are nominated for ministers but no one is asking dem questions abi yet dey are saint and crucifying others.Pls let us reason well and stop bin sentimental.May his soul rest in peace.

DeleteI think this man is up for another game. Post-mortal test should be conducted on his remains to ascertain if it is him. His family should refund the money he stole like they did to abacha's family.
ReplyDeleteIdiot....

ReplyDeleteCardiac arrest means the heart stopped working. Ode!

Delete“Judge not, and you will not be judged; condemn not, and you will not be condemned; forgive, and you will be forgiven; Luke 6:37
ReplyDeleteYes bible talk truly blived,bt Niger bliv,he his just a just thing.
Deletel agreed that what they did to abacha should be done to him too.
ReplyDeleteHe cant die with Nigeria money nah.
Fear of prison killed him
Dear compatriots, ordinarily, chronic diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, asthma etc should not abruptly kill anybody in 21st century.
ReplyDeleteHowever, a recent study revealed that the major cause of sudden deaths from chronic diseases in Africa is due to lack of awareness, medical screening and poor compliance to prescribed treatments. These result to late detection of these ailments and consequently leading to poor response to treatment and death. Correspondingly, the ex-governor's death may not be far from this finding.
Therefore, I wanna challenge everybody in this forum with the above research result. When last did you walk into a nearby clinic to check your blood pressure and blood sugar level? This can only cost you 50 to 500 naira or less! Is this token comparable to life?
Unfortunately, regarding the poor Healthcare system in our country, incidence of any cardiac arrest appears to be an irreversible patient's death warrant. In contrary, this is quite unlikely in the western world where these cases are seen as opportunities to enhance clinical skills. I have witnessed and participated in managing several cardiac arrest cases where each victim was successfully resuscitated more than once. But must one wait until he/she sustains cardiac arrest?
Friends, you can't wait until it goes worse or undetected. Why not screen yourself today? RIP ex-governor.
No good hospital in Bayelsa, all the stolen funds now belong to the government. What a sad ending. Life is so transient, yet, the looters will not listen.
ReplyDeleteDiepreye committed suicide. Thus man knew he had hypertension yet he was making trouble all over the media. He should have kept quiet.,get treatment for his hypertension and would have lived longer to be extradited by Buhari to UK. Chei! This na suicide in disguise.
ReplyDeleteWhat does it profit a man to acquire the whole world and to loose his soul in haven. Most of our politicians today are butch of wastages to our nation's economy. God is watching everybody.
ReplyDeleteNothing I enjoy more than people' comments on Nigeria issues. At the same time, I found nigerians as a merciful people. You loot the treasury without mercy for the poor or the future generations, you never build good school or hospital and you die and people still think you deserve last respect or their respect. Let think and have remorse before it is too late, God never sleep, he is watching us all and he is a fair judge
ReplyDeleteRIP
