Bayelsa declares 7 days mourning for Alamieyeseigha

Bayelsa State Government yesterday declared 7 days of mourning in honour of the first civilian governor of the State Chief Diepreye Alamieyeseigha, who passed on last Saturday and directed that flags in all public buildings and premises across the state be flown at half mast.

This came as the Ijaw Youth Council, IYC, worldwide, flayed the Federal Government and the United Kingdom government, claiming that the latter’s request for Alamieyeseigha’s extradition hastened his death.

The Bayelsa State Government, in a statement by Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Esueme Dan-Kikile, said within the period of mourning, all its official engagements remained cancelled.

Vanguard AlamieyeseighaThe 7 days mourning period and the flying of the flags at half mast, according to the statement, took effect from Monday, noting that the government was working closely with the Alamieyeseigha family to give the former governor a befitting burial.

He said condolence registers had been opened at the office of the Governor, Government House, Yenagoa, office of the Secretary to the State Government, SSG, Secretariat Complex, Yenagoa and Ijaw House, Sani Abacha Way, Yenagoa.

Meanwhile, IYC, has described late Chief Alamieyeseigha as the first victim of the federal government persecution of Ijaw people.

In a statement issued in Yenagoa by its spokesman, Eric Omare, the IYC claimed that Alamieyeseigha, the Governor General of Ijaw nation, was strong and healthy until the politically motivated conspiracy to extradite him to the United Kingdom by the Buhari-led Federal Government.

The IYC, in the statement said: “Alamieyeseigha’s demise is a clear case of constructive murder by the Federal Government of Nigeria. It would be recalled that the IYC had called the attention of the world, especially the governments of the United Kingdom and United States, to this conspiracy a few days ago before the former governor’s demise. Again it has become very clear to us that our marriage in the Nigerian state has become most unbearable.”

In a related development, ex-militant leader, High Chief Government Ekpemupolo, (Tompolo), yesterday, said Alamieyseigha died at a time the Ijaw nation and entire Niger Delta region needed him most.

In a condolence message by his media consultant, Mr. Paul Bebenimbo, he expressed shock at Alamieyeseigha’s sudden demise and wished his family, the people of Bayelsa state and the entire country the fortitude to bear the loss.
