We support embattled Saraki, says Nigerian Senate

The Nigerian Senate on Tuesday declared its support for Senate President Bukola Saraki shortly after he was docked by the Code of Conduct Tribunal sitting in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.

Saraki, who is facing a 13-count charge before the tribunal, was granted bail on self-recognition.

“After the majority of us, Senators of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, witnessed the appearance of our President, Senator Abubakar Bukola Saraki at the Code of Conduct Tribunal this morning, we are happy that he appeared at the tribunal after availing himself of the opportunity to defend his fundamental human rights.

“We also want to state here, on behalf of our colleagues, that the Senate remains solidly behind Senator Saraki and we express our unalloyed support for his leadership,” a statement shortly after Saraki’s bail and signed by Senator Ibrahim Abdullahi Danbaba on behalf of the eighth Senate, said.
“We reiterate the fact that he is our choice for the post of Senate President and no politically motivated, mischievous and vindictive trial will change our opinion of him.

“By his appearance at the tribunal, he has demonstrated his firm belief in the rule of law and his respect for our judicial process.

“We join Dr. Saraki in affirming our commitment to rule of law, constitutionalism and democracy.
“We only hope the other arms of government will ensure that due processes and procedures are followed in this trial and on all other issues.
“The Eighth Senate restates its commitment to the programmes and policies of the Buhari administration.

“It is our belief that at the end of this trial, our democracy, Nigerians and the people will end up as the beneficiaries. May God bless our country, Nigeria,” the statement added.

  1. The genesis of the problem is the constitution of the leadership of the senate. Though many APC members are not happy with the emergence of Saraki as the senate president. Many are of the opinion that this can still be overlooked. But for Saraki to gang up with the enemies - PDP nd sold the post of the deputy senate president to the opposition is unpardonable. It may take time but eventually Saraki will be removed.

  2. All law abiding nigerians support him ad well for behaving like a matured law abiding citizen appearing and respecting the law of the land.Hopefully he will be exonerated and cleared of any wrongdoing, however if he is convicted of any crime then that's a game changer

  3. Are you Senators really serious? Please go home and find something meaningful to do. The nation knows that you are nothing but a sanctuary of thieves, so why wouldn't you support one of your own.

  4. What do you expect from chamber of pen robbers, forgers and thieves?
He should tell us how much he inherited from his father, those he secure from his sweat and those stolen through the wife.
You are now on the same path as Okadigbo, Ewerans and Sanusi. Responsible people in similar post would have resigned by now.
    Na by force?

  5. Saraki finally answered the summons of the Bureau only because his request to block the case was denied by both the High Court and the Appeals court, not because he is a good and exemplary citizen. So, he does not deserve any credit. He simply had no choice at that point in time.

  7. SHAMELESS LEADERS!!! This is a clear evidence that you are all the same. Instead of you covering your faces you have the gut to talk of supporting him. Nothing to point to as progress since Independence. Instead, those infrastructures and institutions inherited from our colonial mentors were either stolen or converted to personal inheritance. The Post Office,Railways,Nigerian Airways. There used to be portable water in those days, even with World Bank Loan to make it reach every hamlet, but gradually the whole thing got reduced to ramshackle boreholes that never produced a tankful of water before being dried out. Effort on electricity is only to erect pole and lifeless wires. UCH Ibadan used to receive emergencies from countries like South Africa and nurses trained then were of international standard, but has deteriorated as a result of corruption. Ajaokuta iron and steel industry which could have been sourcing our engineering sector never came to life,to mention few of the many havoc done to our beloved country by the vandals that manoeuvred their way to the top

But to their credit, they changed the inherited parliamentary system to presidential and moved the national capital to Abuja. They were too much in haste and could not build houses to accommodate workers such that these people ended up sleeping on chairs and tables in their offices when they first started. This paved the way for massive corruption by the officials to build homes as a matter of urgency, all this culminating into exorbitant house rents.A level 12 officer who must needs 2,000,000 naira to pay for accommodation, has to steal to make up: you have to bribe with 1x to receive 2x. This makes Abuja the citadel of corruption in the country. There are many pensioners that are currently being robbed of their pensions.
