Roadblocks’ removal reduces corruption – Police

The Inspector General of Police, Mr Solomon Arase, has said the removal of roadblocks from the nation’s highways and application of other administrative policies had reduced corruption in the Force.

This is contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Tuesday by the Force spokesperson, acting Assistant Commissioner of Police Olabisi Kolawole.

The statement said Arase made the disclosure when the Presidential Advisory Committee on Corruption led by its chairman, Prof. Itsey Sagay, paid him a courtesy visit in Abuja.

It said that Arase further gave his total support for a warm relationship with the committee to succeed in its task.

Sagay, according to the statement, had earlier said the committee was confident in the ability of the Inspector General to take the police to greater heights.

He said his committee would assist the police and other agencies saddled with the responsibility of fighting corruption to succeed.

Sagay stated that the committee was mandated to promote the effectiveness of the administration of criminal justice in the country.

He also said the committee had the responsibility to improve the integrity of officers and men engaged in the fight against corruption in the country.

  1. Hmm, window dressing. Are the road blocks truely removed??? Well may be in the capital territory. With my experience in the past few month, there has been no change in policing. I still come across so many Road blocks within my city. Every one meter u get stopped by police and have to respond to their silly questions, which sometimes get me almost pissed.

  2. Mr. IG, your boys are still on the nation’s highways extorting money from drivers, and if you doubt, silently deploy your monitoring team within SS and SE zones or better-still, deploy your monitoring team to inspect Police activies along Port Harcourt Owerri Road, Enugu-Okigwe-Port harcourt Road, Warry-Port Harcourt-Calabar Highways.

  4. From Lagos to Benin about 2 weeks ago there were over 30 round check points. So either the IG does not know what he is saying or his subordinates are running illegal checkpoints to his knowledge because the police can not help itself.

  5. Corruption in Nigeria Police mostly takes place in the office and not at road blocks. The collection of N20.00 at the road blocks, thou wrong is obviously of less effect on the society and the Force than crimes like- diversion of Police funds, fraud in recruitment, posting and promotion, swapping of criminals, paid extra judicial killings, murder of in nocent ppl and labeling them as criminals, etc.
