Reasons why Nigeria is already destined to fail – Fani-Kayode

A former Minister of Aviation, Femi Fani-Kayode, says Nigeria has been destined to fail since its creation by the British in 1914.

He said the British created Nigeria such that the ‘poor North’ would continue to rule while the ‘rich South’ will remain oppressed.

Fani-Kayode said this in a Facebook post on Tuesday titled, “The 9th Earl of Bathrust and the Nigerian State.”

He said shortly before independence, the British gave the North permanent rule.

He said, “The Nigeria that they (British) handed over to us in 1960 was nothing but an unworkable artificial state and a poisoned chalice. It was destined to fail right from the outset.

“Worse still, they handed us that poisoned chalice with a malicious and mischievous intent and without any recourse to our people in terms of any form of a national referendum.”

Fani-Kayode, said what the British did in Nigeria was replicated in other countries like India and Sudan, adding that those countries had since divided having woken up politically.

He said it was regrettable that Nigerians had failed to take their destinies into their own hands.

He added, “The British did the same thing in varying degrees when they left virtually each and every one of their other third world colonies. The most obvious cases, however, were Nigeria, Sudan, India and the nation that was formerly known as Malaya.

“Every one of these four countries had monumental problems with sustaining their unity after independence and all of them, with the exception of Nigeria, were compelled to breakup into smaller entities before they could bring out the best in themselves as a people and fully exercise their human potential.

“Consequently, India broke up into three and became India, Pakistan and Bangladesh; the Sudan broke into two and became Southern Sudan and the Sudan and Malaya broke into two and became Malaysia and Singapore. Nigeria has yet to find the courage and fortitude to go that far and whether we will eventually break up or not remains to be seen.”

Fani-Kayode said if the terms of the ‘marriage’ between the North and the South were not reviewed, there could be further crisis.

He added, “The result of the amalgamation was predictable. It was either the ‘poor husband’ (the North) would fully subjugate and eventually kill the ‘rich wife’ (the South) or the ‘rich wife’ would fully subjugate and eventually kill the ‘poor husband’. And we are right in the middle of that struggle for mutual subjugation till today.”

The Peoples Democratic Party chieftain said the only way to address the “unfair” arrangement was a complete devolution of powers. He said Nigeria must embrace true federalism.

  1. I reject it in Jesus name!
It is Fani Kayode and his whole family that are destined to fail and not my country Nigeria. What an insult on the generality of the Nigeria populace!
This man needs an urgent psychiatric evaluation...KayJoe

    1. Why can't you argue based on the logic in his treatise? Give us other reasons why there is southern Sudan, Malaysia and Pakistan today instead of abusing Fani Kayode. Most of us cannot engage in any productive academic exercise and resort to crass abuse. Mind you, am no fan of Fani Kayode but even a mad man utters some truth sometimes and certainly Fani is not a mad man.

    2. Off course he is. Fani Kayode is a mad man and confusion. Was it after his pay master GEJ was voted out that the marriage of southern and norther protectorate was contracted? If not, why didn't he voiced this out and herald it loud and clear that Nigeria is doomed to fail and reject ministerial appointment? Why didn't he tell us this before the election that there is no further need for election that Nigeria should break up in order to dissolve the marriage? From his character, you can see that FKK is a selfish man to the core. Now that he is a place where he and his likes are at no likely in all ramifications smell the scent of power but rather face the wrath of judgement he now knew that the amalgamation of 1914 was wrong. Has he forgotten that population and earning capability and purchasing power of the people go a long way to swing the economy of a nation. Nigeria has the population, but FFK and his cohorts squandered our resources, and covert most of it into their personal pockets. Now that we are about to ask wetin dey your pocket, he suddenly realized that we are not compatible, simple that a no nonsense northerner is at the helm of affairs of the nation. Let us ask the idiot, if he has the chance now to become the president of this nation will he be saying this? When a thief is in a place where he cannot steal the place will not be good to him! That is FFK for you!

  5. I have never commented before about any topic but am forced to speak as a patriotic Nigerian. Sadly FFK was a former minister and has held a lot of national appointments to know better than make such treasonable statements.

  10. Just like his father, for those of you who grew up 30 years ago may not know him, his father and few other groups instigated the famous western regional house carpet crossing and ousted Dr. Nnamdi Azikiwe from the house that an Igbo man can never come to rule in the west... B4 that time we have Nigerians running election anywhere you reside in Nigeria; Umoru Altine an Hausa man was the Mayor of Enugu, a position that was more revered than the present day governor since that time we operated on regions Professor Eyo Ita from Cross River was the leader of NCNC in the East, and even the Igbos holds very sensitive positions in the North, it was Fani kayode Senior that started the revolt of regional politics in Nigeria.....so I am not surprise to see his son towing his line..... Though unlike his father who was a political tug to Awolowo who stab and maimed political opponents, his young son does his own with his mouth and Pen what a family

  13. Nigeria has to break apart. That is the best thing for all of us. It is not working the way it is right now and we all know it. Let us stop pretending and break apart. Pretension is not going to make things better.

  14. People have spoken. He has once been in a position to correct his thought but he didnt instead he was messing around with poor madams. i know him when he used to attend TREM when he was seriously impoverished if not for the sake of Obasanjo who mistakenly assisted him thru.......... But let him tell us the solusolution or the best way to nip that so that we will not all fail bcos majority are still struggling unlike him who has been "LUCKY" with the "JUDICIARY".GOD BLESS NIGERIA............skinñ

  15. Truth hurts so you abuse him. Nigeria is clearly divided and only a mater of time before the breakup.

  16. Well there is still sense in what you are saying. Ruling Nigeria is not the birthright of the north. Don't misunderstand me. Buhari is trying and doing well at the moment. But I see a northerner talking over from Buhari. The North have ruled Nigeria for long without trying to even develop where the nation wealth comes from. If not for Niger delta militant, nothing would have been done in the south while the likes of Kaduna, Abuja, Kano etc have express roads as if they want to fly an aircraft on them but the south are in deplorable condition. FFK, you are not completely wrong, there is sense in what your saying.
