The son of the late business mogul and politician, Mr Kola Abiola hinted at the weekend that Nigeria will be doing a great honour to the memory of his late father (MKO Abiola) by awarding him with the posthumous honour of the Commander of the Federal Republic, CFR.

According to junior Abiola, part of what can make his father happy in death is by accord him with the necessary respect he deserved for his aspirations and love for the development of Nigeria while he was alive.

Abiola died in custody on July 7, 1998 at the wake of his struggling to claim the mandate given to him by Nigerians in the 1993 presidential election.

  1. For God's sake this man was not a saint. Because he met his death in a terrible way does not make him one either. ITT

    1. What kind of logic is this? Is it being a saint or meeting your death in a terrible way that qualifies you for a national award? Can you tell us one of the national award recipients (from the lowest award to the highest award) that was a saint.? By the way, I guess there was a mistake, Kola probably aked for GCFR. I do not believe he did not know or would have forgotten that MKO was awarded CFR in 1998. Apart from contesting for presidency, can you check Wikipedia to recall the achievements of this man in his private endeavours and tell which other Nigerian is more qualified for a GCFR than him. A recipient of so many international awards, an acknowledged fighter for justice for the blacks, champion of reparation for Africa, a sport philanthropist, appointed pillar of sport in Africa, honoured with countless traditional titles in almost every geopolitical zone in Nigeria, patron of several social, religious and academic institutions, an early orphan who by dint of struggles and hard work rose to prominence, a golden key recipient to cities in US, a man with great business presence in Nigeria, an unmatched philanthropist in his generation, a former president of the NSE, and countless other achievements too many to recall in this space.

    1. Giving him award, even GCFR cannot bring him back. But I believe giving him award posthumously could be an official acknowledgement that the nation officially recognise his contribution and personal sacrifice and the wrong that was done to him. But the same way Awo, Zik, Ahmadu Bello etc are not remembered by the awards they were given but by those whose lives were touched by their works, MKO would be remembered by several Nigerians and their descendants.
